the thing is, I CAN use the search function on TA to good use.

It doesn't work at all either.

Example:

Try to search for "Droog halloween" (without the quotes, of course) and select "Posts from 2008 and newer". You will get no results.

But, oh surprise! What's this thread over here then?

http://www.tranceaddict.com/forums/...threadid=504700

It took me a ing while to find it, had to actually go through a poster's entire post history in order to find it.

Another simple example, and actually very ing retarded:

Search for "Droog" and select posts from 2008 and newer and restrict it to posts in DJ Promotion only. You will get a bunch of results. Now, change the time frame to "blank", which is supposed to search the entire history of TA. That's right, no results. Try it even with 2006 and 2007. Nada.

Woscar, look in each of the posts in that thread. Do you notice that the words Droog and Halloween are NOT included in any of the posts? Not once. If you checked "search entire post" that could be why you couldn't find the thread.

When I ask search to "check titles only" in 2008 including the words Droog and Halloween, it found your thread:

http://www.tranceaddict.com/forums/...rder=descending

Usually, there's a logical explanation for why it doesn't work when it doesn't work.

Well me sideways! :haha:

To be fair though, I also searched all sorts of combinations with droog halloween avalon to no avail. If you notice, the words "Halloween" and "Avalon" ARE included on the first post and it still doesn't find it. Try to search for halloween avalon on entire posts ;)

Search has it's limitations, I agree.

However:

Halloween is but NOT Droog - it's included in the title of the first post, not the post itself. The title of the post doesn't count as content of the post for search.

My bad - where it says '2008' it means only posts from 2008 (not 'and newer') -- I've removed the 'and newer' part and that "blank" time frame was only meant as a separator - it doesn't search from the beginning. That's likely not intuitive so I put dashes there for now until something better is done.

Thanks for the explanation, I didn't know that the title didn't count as part of the whole thread, and that's pretty much why I never used that option ;)

However, there still is something wrong there that you might want to check out. Let's keep using the Droog Halloween set as an example.

We know that is was posted on December or 2008, in DJ Promotion and that the first post includes the words "Honey" and "Halloween" so try to search for "honey halloween" (without the quotes, of course) in all posts from 2008, only in DJ Promotion, in entire posts. No results found.

Also, is there a way to search from the beginning without having to search each year at a time?

Cheers!

I did that search and it found it -- both showing results as 'posts' and showing results as 'threads'. I don't know what you're doing different from me.

The reason you can't search everything at once (like it used to be) is because it slows things down to a crawl. You'll also notice that most big vBulletin forums out there don't allow you to search unless you register+log-in -- it's usually for this very reason. (performance)

Oh - also - all the words here are not indexed so if your search term is based on some of these words you may run into problems.

Feel free to let me know of any words I should remove from that list -- or even better - any words I should add (i.e. jennypie).
