its VERY hard to tell the difference between 256 and 320 kbps

My uncle Ali can tell the difference between 320 kbps and CD! I don't know what he hears that almost EVERYONE doesn't! He uses professional headphones, though. He can't tell between 256 and 320 though. Encoders matter, though. I can tell a bad 192 from an excellent 160. I hate it when I DL a 192+ track and it sounds like a 128/160! If you don't use LAME, you're NEVER going to get the most out of ANY bitrate, including 320 kbps. I ahve 1 320 that sounds like a 192 or 224. I think it was encoded with Fraunhoffer because they're OK. If that 320 track was encoded with LAME, it wouldn't have the artefacts that I can hear in the Surround Channels of my 5.1 system.

yeah, professional headphones make a big difference, also did you give your uncle a 'blind' test?

also rather not get into 5.1 systems, thats a whole new ball game, heh :D

too in right! remember most non-trance songs on AG were in 128kps? i usually encode in VBR with LAME, why can't more ppl do the same?

drop your blade xing FhG encoders and get Razor LAME now!

'cos not everyone can afford the $$ and/or space for a turntable.

That's me right there: No space and not enough money for the TTs or the equipment for ripping as well as the vinyl.

I gave him a blind listening test and he was right on everything!

Because they want to save HD space I guess.

I can tell the difference between 320 kbps mp3 and a 16/44 pcm wav... I can tell on the extreem high frequencies especially. but then I think i have abnormally good hearing.

for example, if there is a TV on in my house anywhere, I know its on no matter if im in the same room as it or not, cause I can hear an extreemly hi-piched noise that no one else seems to hear.

plus mp3s seem to distort sometimes when there is heavy EQing that goes down rock bottom to the frequencie scale..

now, if u want a real challenge.. try hearing the difference between 16/44 and 24/96 wav. i can barely tell the difference, if at all.

I know the sound that you're talking about. Comes from the screen. Try listening REAL good in a SILENT room, as you turn a TV on, and after the noise some of them make at the beginning, you'll KEEP HEARING a constant, high-pitched, noise. Make sure that when you turn the TV on, there's no sound coming from it, as you won't hear it due, to the loud speakers of the TV. So, In other words, mute teh TV's volume before you turn it on.

I have NO experience in 24 bit resolution or 96 Khz Sampling Rate sounds. I never heard a sample of them. What's 24 bit, 44100 Hz like, when compared to CD?

yeah, that TV high pitched noise thing is worse on some tv's than others too.. but its anooooying at times. i wish it wouldnt make that noise.

24/96 or 24/44 is better quality audio than 16/44,, but only if it was directly recorded in 24/96. the file sizes are HUGE too.. i produce tracks, and I stack up the GB just by recording samples off my synth at that quality.

oh, u gotta have a sound card that supports 24/96 too.. to be able to hear it in that quality. most personal sound cards dont support it. im guessing they use this high quality when they make vinyls and stuff, so thats why I use it.

holy crap!! haha... i thought i was CRAZY all these years!!! you can hear that too?? damn.... i remember when i was a kid, i used to bea able to hear whenever my tv was on, no matter where in the house i was in.... i'm not as good at it anymore though... i guess all the loud music has messed my ears up, =P.

i think i have abnormaly good hearing too. i can hear a lot of flanging in some mp3s that no one else hears... i say "this is such a bad mp3" and they look at me like i'm nuts, =P.

lol if you saw my smiley face you would see i was joking
some people shouldnt be so fussy though, they should be happy without the mp3 they wouldnt have the song at all!
Cable
24/96 is used mainly for editing/shaping, where maximum sound precision is needed. i can barely tell the difference, 24/96 seems to sound smoother in raises and falls (more dynamic range 24bit), and has more definition in the high end frequencies.
