i have heard hardstyle before if you read my thread , my question is what are the main differences to normal or hard trance ,i have heard it many times and i love it.
my thing is sometimes i struggle when i tell myself before i even start producing the track the genre of that track like now im gonna make classic trance this track is gonna be dream or this track will be uplifting ...rather than just doing whatever producing the track and injecting my unique feel and make sure it sounds good and then when its finished listen to it and ask myself what it sounds like this track sounds like? when i do that im fine . Once i know characteristics of any genre i just start producing for example
dream trance uses a lot of reverb
techno uses a lot of automation and distortion etc. |

i agree with you 100% when i just do what i feel and do whatever sounds good im fine producing i only have this problem when i try and name a genre to my trrack before i even start producing it.
but i should do what i like and whatever i want more often from the beginning. |

Just do the music you like man, you don't have to name the genre if you don't know it. |
Exactly. Genres should simply be descriptive, not prescriptive. |

I read it again, can't see where you state that you listen to hardstyle.
I'm not trying to be difficult, but I can't see it in your original post. Asking "what are some characteristics that hardstyle has"...I was thinking if you'd heard it before, you'd know the characteristics that hardstyle has - the range of sounds/ rhythmic patterns and so on. It seemed odd that you were trying to produce music you hadn't heard, but it also seems odd that you're asking for people's definitions of hardstyle rather than using your ears to work out which bits of hardstyle you like and don't like - we all have different tastes, I'm sure you like certain hardstyle songs better than others. |

I don't mean to sound rude, but if you don't hear/know the difference between hardstyle and trance, perhaps you shouldn't be producing either. |
