Distortion Plugs

Hey guys, I'm looking to get a distortion plug-in but need some help at deriving the best solution. I guess the best example I can give is similar to what Ferry Corsten uses in his production styles (i.e. the intro's of Into The Dark and Made Of Love). Any ideas?

Could be on-synth distortion, such as Sylenth1 uses (and I'm sure some HW synths aswell)

Which serves its purpose pretty well, I haven't found a free distortion plugin that isn't utter crap for serious usage, don't have any experience with retail ones.

Software isn't that great at distortion IMO. Anything by Ohm force is an exception though! Izotope trash isn't bad either

Yep I posted the same basic thread a few weeks ago, it concluded with me realizing most software distortion plugins in fact do blow monkey balls..

Not your typical distortion but try out CamelPhat and CamelSpace. You can get some really crazy and sometimes cool results.

I'm always tied between these 3 Distortion Plugins:

Ohmforce Ohmicide
Camel Audio CamelPhat
Audio Damage Kombinat

Ohmicide offers multiband distortion and is very sophisticated. You can put tons of different distortion types from subtle to total sound mangling, as well as compression/phatness on various bands. Its great if you are have an exact idea of what you are going for and what you need to do. The "shapeability" of the sound and the distortion is unmatched. Disadvantage is when you just want to slap a bit of distortion on the ******, you have to tweak a lot of buttons first. So think of it more of a specialist used by specialists.

CamelPhat provides a good sound, but has one disadvantage... it doesnt use multiple bands, so you either distort all or nothing, sometimes a bit frustrating when you want to distort just the midrange. Otherwise it has little options, but all of these have an audible effect on the sound. In addition it features 2 filters and 2 LFOs that can become useful for giving your sound character. I love the xciter for high frequency enhancement.

Kombinat offers multiband distortion without going too complex, in fact its limited on a few basic controls. Its best suited for really harsh types of distortion. I think all of the distortion types sound great. My favorite is a slight bit of "warp" distortion just on the high frequencies. Other than that its probably the best of the 3 when you just want to quickly put distortion on a certain frequency area, or when you just want to experiment with radical methods of distortion.

Check out d16's plugins, Devastator and Decimator, they are nice.
