Ableton Question.... Moving a grouped track from Session View to Arrangement Mode.

Hello Ableton Wizards...
I've ran into another problem and as always, you guys are my best bet for help.
I made a loop on Session View.
Here's a screenshot.

Now, I wanna layout the track on arrangement mode. Usually I can just copy and paste the clip, or hold down tha Apple Key while clicking the clip and switch to arrangement mode, than put the clip whereever I want.
Now the problem is, I want to layout the drum loop elements individually so I can bring them in one at a time. But, all my drum elements are grouped!!! How do I bring the kicks, snares, hats, individually into arrangement mode since there's no physical clip? :(
Same thing happens with the vocal track. I ran the vocals through Orange Vocoder. However, to do this, you have to use 3 tracks... 1 is your voice, 2 is your pattern, and 3 is the processed output of your vocoded track. How do I bring the processed track into arrangement mode since there's no physical clip either?
Here's a screenshot for that.
Hope it all makes sense and you guys can guide me in the right direction.
Thanks!!!
- Woody

| Is their a way you can use midi notes to trigger drum samples? You can't change a VST's pattern from ableton. |
|
|
| Beatflux |
| You could record the output of the drum tracks and vocoder tracks to audio tracks, and then arrange it from there. |

| Cryogen |
| Yes. Hit the record button at the top and perform the track as you want it with all the adjustments. Live will record every move you make and paste it automatically into the arrangement view. You can then edit all the automation points to clean it up if you made any mistakes. |

Why do you have one midi clip which goes to many channels and then they all are grouped together again in the Drum Group? Doesn't that defeat the purpose of separate channels? That channel "drums" is fairly obsolete. Each channel should have it's own midi and then you can group them together.
Do this:
1. Get rid of the channel "drums" but first copy the midi in it to all the other percussion channels.
2. Go to each perc channel and delete all the midi except for the one that relates to that instrument.
3. Now go and edit each one individually in arrangement.
I really don't see the point of the first group to be honest, what were you tryin to achieve :conf:
EDIT - Ooooooooh hold on, are you using something like battery? That would explain it. |

I was following a video tutorial. What I did was this...
1.- Load samples into simpler
2.- Made my patter on the DRUMS track
3.- Created individual midi tracks and routed each sample from the drum track into each midi track. On other words, broke it down.
4.- Applied some effects (brightness, compression, etc) to the individual tracks to make certain sounds stand out more.
5.- Routed the output of each sample to the DRUMS GROUP. That way you have easy volume control over the entire part.
This is what that screenshot sounds like. Obviously it's something I recreated, so I can't take full credit for it.

Arrangment View is easier and more straight forward. Arranging in Live is actually very simple.
Session View might take a minute to learn, but it's meant for coming up with ideas on the fly and quick trial-and-error usage without effecting the arrangement (i.e. you dont have to delete, copy, paste, undo, etc) and is extremely versatile once you learn how to use it.
If you learn how to intertwine the two views you will be able to get your ideas out much faster and keep the creativity flowing.
@ Woody, are you using Live 8? If not then Fledz hs the right idea. That is how you should handle the situation. You can still have the Drum Group Track if you wanted to control all of their outputs at once or add effects, but you'd need all the drums to have their own seperate midi tracks.
However if you are using Live 8 it has a grouping function so you dont have to do all that re-routing.
Honestly either way I would ecourage just using Ableton's Drum Rack if I were you. Its much easier and unlike Impulse it loads every sample you add to it into a different Simpler in a different channel, but also unlike Impulse you can add effects to the seperate samples and change the seperate volumes with faders. Or if you want to turn them all down at once you can use the on the main Drum Rack fader.

could you not switch to the arrangement screen, draw new midi clips like the ones u did in Session view and work from there?
Your audio tracks are the exact same whether in Session or Arrangement.
They will still be seperated and still have all their individual fx, your just looking at them in a different view
Sure your midi notes are "grouped" - thats fine too
From what i gather from your post, you have a midi clip in session view, but no midi clips in arrangement, its just a matter of creating midi clips in arrangment, you could even copy and paste your midi notes from the session clip into your new clip in the arrangment screen
Alternatively you could still progress the track in Session mode by using more clips with follow actions etc.. but i think its easier to sequence in the arrangement window
hope that helps a bit |

that makes sense. its kinda like a beefed up version of fruityloops "patterns". I know its powerfull, i just need to get used to it. |

Yea, it's by far the best sequencer I've used when it comes to experimenting and starting a track.
Once you're happy with everything, you can continue in Ableton or export to another sequencer. Personal preference really. |
