hey everyone, i've pretty much just started off trying to produce trance, and was after some feedback or tips. I seem to be able to program drum tracks and basslines with relative ease, but am finding i get stuck when it comes to adding more sounds like stabs etc. can anyone let me know some good ways of programming in synth stabs/chords etc to build up into a trance sounding track? and i'd really love to know how to get tech sounds like simon patterson/sander van doorn etc. any help would be really helpful. thanks

No easy answer here i'm afraid mate.

Check out the tutorials on this site, google, and experiment are you best friends.

Learn a little music theory (key, scales, harmony, etc). I'm afraid it's not going to happen overnight. Try and look through a few old posts on here. A few guys on here know their and try to keep your posts sensible.

Your question is very broad and can not be answered easily. Search & Experiment ;)

Also, post some clips of your tracks no matter how bad you think they may be - that way we'll have some frame of reference to give you advice. Otherwise, we'd just be shooting in the dark.

A good tip I got from here years ago which relates to both stabs and thematic progression with melodies:

If you have your melody, even a long hook, try just playing it then muting and unmuting at rhythmic intervals. Great way to get stabs which constitute your main melody. You can also then try thing like using the same melody line with a different synth patch (like something more sharp or lends itself to stabs for instance) but just use that mtue technique for the stabs.

ok cool, as i said any info or help is great. just regarding stab sounds, is it common to just have a two or three note chord playing over a bar with an arrpegiator or gate etc ( i have been told this before) or simply being creative with your choice of notes?

All these methods are commonly used. I'd recommend trying them all out, so you'll know what to use when you want a certain result.

I found that if you want some synth stabs I've made ones before with a few sawtooth osc no attack detuned a little and just play a chord. Mess around with several notes at one so it sounds fatter and add deep reverb a little delay and that's how I would make a basic stab I suppose each to there own but that's my way also mess around with some different waveforms :)
