What's the best way to compromise between stereo and mono mixing?
My thoughts on this are to make sure all your important elements of bass, melody, percussion are mixed well together in the center and phatened up to produce a "big mono" sound. Then place perhaps unneeded detail instruments off to the side.
I like having my melodies bounce side to side, and I place a lot of instruments important to the mix off to the side. I'd hate to lose that ability. Maybe seperate mono and stereo tracks should be mixed? Would having a centered and panned copy of every important element work? (Under the assumption that when played back in mono you'll still hear the center-placed instrument)?? |

| read about M/S (mid/side) mixing, you will always have trade offs between mono and nice wide stereo, the trick is to make choices that mask them well. |
