Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark...

Anyone else more or less have these books alongside them while they were growing up (assuming you could wrestle it from the hands of all the other kids clamoring for it at the library)?

There was really some quality, thoughtful material here, and with plenty of almost educational folklore.

Retrospectively, I can't believe this was lumped in with children's reading material, as a good chunk of it was downright disturbing, especially the accompanying artwork (extra points if you can figure out which stories these were from...though no points for the second one):

Kept me up many a night, that's for sure.

i read these when i was in elementary school, i loved them as a kid but the pics always freaked me the out

there was one about a girl who had a big zit on her face or something that got bigger and bigger, her mom told her not to touch it and it ended up being a giant nest of spiders that exploded all over her face or something.. and another one about a serial killer hiding in a girl's backseat or something. but i digress.

@ OP- the last one has something to do with that kid finding that toe and eating it or something like that right?

Yeah, that was called "Big Toe," about the kid who finds a toe lodged into the ground in his garden that was apparently still connected to someone. He pulls it out, takes it home, and has his mother winds up cooking it for the family dinner.

The rightful owner of the toe arrives later that night to reclaim it. :stongue:
