Anyone tried the Spec? any thoughts .. I'm thinking of buying one or the other in the next few weeks to ease my personal misery and suffering with the Virus(Swine Flu??) TI.

What's wrong with the Virus?

Just wondering because practically everyone who has one seems to rave about it.

where do i start... sigh...

I bought it about 2 years ago, eagerly expecting a working USB interface and Virus Control.. silly me... it was more broken than a 40 year old mule with asthma.. combining the instabillity of software with the hassle of hardware.

Never the less I switched back to using my TI via midi/audio, every os/firmware update I would diligently install in the hopes that the usb stuff would get better.

To this day.. I have the same problems I had right from the start (granted a few have gone away).

The original list of problems I had was:
When using it via VirusControl:

#1 note dropping, notes not getting triggered (ive ruled out polyphony or cpu load as this happens with just 1 or 2 patches playing a few 1/16th note stabs) God help me if I try to use a pad... a simple triad usually lands up as just 2 notes. This problem happens via virus control AND in standalone h/w synth operation.

#2 ARP timings go out via both VC and h/w even with midi clock (this one seems right finally).

#3 FX trails (reverb/delay) start wobbling and pitching when a note ends (only sometimes). This only happens via Virus control still to this day.

#4 The Virus Control AU GUI freezes after being left alone for a while.. If I leave Logic open for an hour for example and go have dinner.. come back, open the plugin it still responds to audio, but the actual GUI doesn't update properly. Only fix is to remove the plugin totally close logic and restart.

#5 related to no 4, when left open some parts' tuning seems to go haywire. If you check the oscillators they're still set correctly and all the part options, but you have some horrible deathly sounding detuned noise that is no longer linked to the pitch of the key you press... filthy.. still happens to this day

I've tried hard resets, latest firmware re-installs (im on os 3.0.3 or whatever this latest one is). Different sequencers.. different usb cables, double checking for usb contention (the ti has it's own root hub)... there is no solution.. the TI is a piece of sh1t.. this happens on pc/mac and with 2 different ti's ive tried...mine and a mates.

The TI|2 is the biggest anti-climax in history.. firstly why the hell couldn't they implement usb2 highspeed and give us 8-16 part outputs via usb? who knows.. they claim production costs but thats a blatant lie.. Id even lose the physical audio/midi/dac stuff from the unit if they had 16 part high speed usb that worked... why didn't they add a plus model or something with extra cpus so you can ACTUALLY run all 16 parts? who knows
some people claim to be able to use like 11 parts on their TI.. for me if i get more than 1 w ithout note dropping its a miracle.

The oscillators sound somewhat like a cat spitting up a furball.. i really find the sounds that come out of the TI to overly similar to each other and not very pleasing. they seldom sit well in a mix without tons of abuse and on their own raw they're pretty damn awful.

At the end of the day.. its the single most expensive unit in my setup cost me 20k local when I bought it... and it's the one thing that hardly ever gets used as it's just to flaky.

Personally I really want an A6 too.. but finding them is rare if not impossible (especially here). And to have one of the refurbed or 2nd hand shipped doubles the price basically... looking at abou $5000.00 :(

I couldn't agree with your more about the Virus. Everything you said I completely understand and have experienced myself.

I wouldn't go with a Prophet, though. I put together this thread that may help you out :

Oh johno27 are u from South Africa?

I know you like vuvuzelas!!! Haaa be honest!!!

for curiosity... I think the TV has solved the problem with the transmission with a frequency pot on the incoming stadium audio exactly in the vuvuzelas frequency... they minimized alot. Now because of a simple EQ technique this World Cup will be better!! :toothless
johno27
Haha .. god don't even remind me of those filthy things.. that noise is horrific.. oh well what can you do :)

I'm currently leaning more towards the a6 than anything else, but I doubt if I'll be able to find one.. so I may have to settle for something else... but what.. I just don't know.

I'm organizing a mass petition to the international sales manager at access if anyone wants to join in. I'm trying to demand that they resolve these issues within a minimum time period or else give us all a full refund for our TI's...

I already have a JP8080, SupernovaII, Nord Rack 3, JD800, 2080+expanders. So based on your list that only leaves me with the andromeda a6... lol

Have you tried a Waldorf Pulse? You'd be able to pick one of those up quite cheaply and buy the Vengeance soundset for it. It's a monophonic analog synth, it can do some very nice basses and leads. They're also quite cheap, definitely worth a look.

Get a Moog Voyager RME. I got one recently. It's incredible for bass-lines and you should be able to get it shipped pretty cheap.
