A cover isn't useless off course, it can be a powerful (marketing) tool to attract people, to stand out among other covers. But there's where it ends. It won't sell music if what's on the disc inside is qualified as garbage by the listener. But as musical taste, a cover will be judged based on personal taste. So actually it's all subjective.
