Well, not that I expect you to run out and buy one of these, but I'll throw it out there just because of the coincidental timing. I just got a Yamaha FS1R synth this week - it was only produced for one year (1998) and it's widely regarded as the deepest FM hardware synth ever made. It combines that with a similar form of synthesis called "formant synthesis", which essentially combines FM algorithms with resonant band-pass filters to create vowel-like sounds - you can literally make this synth talk (without any samples - pure digital waveform generation here), if you know what you're doing. Anyway, this thing combines those two forms of synthesis to create massive breathy choir pads like nothing I've ever heard.
The problems with the synth are that: a) they're hard to find, b) not cheap (I got mine for <$600, but I've seen most sell for $750-900 over the past few months), c) a bitch to program (you definitely need a software editor, a solid understanding of FM synthesis, and some third-party information regarding formant synthesis), and d) the user's manual is incredibly poorly written and almost worthless. But, man this baby is deep and I look forward to many years of trying to figure it out. :p |
