First of all, hello to everyone here at TranceAddict..!

I've kind of been a lurker for a little while, and have definitely appreciated the wealth of knowledge that some of you guys bring to the table. Look forward to hanging out here officially from now on, and hopefully not making the admins' life any harder than it is heheh. :thepirate

In any case, I've actually been in the process of getting parts together to build a relatively noteworthy audio-production computer on about a $1000 budget, including an i7 CPU and probably some kind of $100-200 M-Audio card (looking at Audiophile 2496 currently). It doesn't seem like much, but for $1000 worth of parts, you can really piece quite a rig together.. :)

What I was wondering was.... what peoples' thoughts are as to which types of sound cards would be more ideal than others for this kind of setup (x64/drivers/etc.) and if, say, Windows 7 64-bit is even really worth using at this point or not. I know there is a lot of discussion and controversy about this, but I kinda wanted to start a separate thread that closer related to my specific situation.

Any hardware/audio suggestions are also welcomed!

Thats basically how I started out.

PC, 2496 sound card, and Cubase SX, and a pair of headphones. Which I thought was great for quite a few years.

I don't know about the new version of Windows as I'm still using XP.

XP is probably Windows' best operating system atm so just stick with XP Professional. I'm unfortunately running Media Center (compatible with NOTHING) until I can get a copy of XP Prof.

Thanks for your reply.. yeah, I've been on XP myself for a while now (and love it), but I've simply been wondering lately if "it's finally the right time" to move on up or not (a question that I imagine everyone wonders at least once when upgrading to new hardware :P).. especially considering XP's 3gb RAM limit, now that newer hardware usually likes to pack 6-8gb of RAM.

If anyone with experience with x64/Windows 7/etc. has anything to share as far as audio performance and stability, feel free to!

Get Windows XP 64bit and you can get more ram. Any 32bit system is limited [mostly] to 3.5ish GB ram.

Yep Media Center is awful.

Is Windows 7 even out yet?

for PCI id get Echo MiaMIDI, it has balanced outs compared to others:
http://www.echoaudio.com/Products/PCI/MiaMIDI/index.php

"Driver support for Windows 95/98/Me/2000/XP/Vista (32-bit and 64-bit) and Macintosh OS 8/9/X (10.2 or later)"

I have had three different Echo Firewire soundcards and they all rock (except that I blew one of them but thats another story). They have great customer support too, they actualy let me turn in my broken Audiofire2 and bought Audiofire4 for the difference in amount as if the broken one was new. Thats awesome. You could actualy consider firewire soundcards so u are flexible incase u get a laptop later. Then Audiofire 4 is the best one compared to price.

What? I've been running MCE for years and it's compatibility is exactly like XP Pro...

Hahah.. XP Media Center vs Pro... I guess a lot of it depends on your personal experience with whichever one you own; whatever.. ya know.

Thank you for the PCI card suggestion... hmmm, I'm really looking for some kind of resource that would be able to maybe point me in the right direction as far as good amounts of product reviews from experienced audio folk. I tried zzsounds.com but a lot of that's just average consumers talking. :P

I heard from a friend that mostly EVERYThing works in 64-bit nowadays..

Hopefully, this is true..

I think the TA search button will help u find the right soundcard, and it most cases u will end up finding Echo devices beacuse they are quality at low price. Iv had Echo Audiofie 12 and 2 and sits here with Audiofire 4 now. All of them are great but Audiofire2 doesnt have a powerbutton and its so lightweight that the cables drags it down on the floor making the firewire-connection loose and then explode the device beacuse its powered from firewire. lol. I dont know how MiaMidi sounds compared to the audiofire series though it would be nice to know.
