Virgin Festival announces Toronto show, but thanks to the strike, it won't be in Toronto (updated)

Music festivals, Virgin Ontari 2009

Update (4:30pm): Since I posted this, Virgin Festival's PR people have gotten in touch to say that V-Fest organizers discounted the Island as a venue before the Toronto strike happened. The idea was to give revelers the chance to camp overnight, which you can't do on Toronto Island. That being said, I have a question for you, dear reader. If you are/were planning to go to the Ontario V-Fest this year, has the move to Orillia changed your mind? Would you rather camp in Orillia or ferry to the Island?
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Maybe they were waiting for the Toronto civic strike to end, but it took half the summer for Virgin to announce the lineup for this year's "Ontario" edition of their cross-Canada summer festival.

The summer fest has traditionally been held on Toronto Island, a 10-minute ferry ride from downtown Toronto. But with the city on strike, there's no ferry service (and did we mention the garbage?). So this year's festival will take place in the distant outpost of Orillia, Ontario.

Now to the lineup. Ben Harper's new act is great, and The Pixies and Franz Ferdinand make day one a safe bet. And, as for day two, Nine Inch Nails are apparently on some kind of a farewell tour, or something, so there's that. Mutemath is really good live, and Mew's new single sounds pretty amazing. Also, there's plenty of good Canadian indie acts.

However, with setting the festival over an hour away from downtown Toronto, perhaps the festival may have been better served by cramming all the big names into one long day, and dispersing the smaller acts across several smaller stages. Or at least throwing a tent into the ticket price.

Saturday, August 29:
Ben Harper and Relentless7
Pixies
Franz Ferdinand
Paolo Nutini
Grizzly Bear
Sloan
Plants and Animals
Down With Webster
Rural Alberta Advantage
Iglu and Hartly.

Sunday, August 30
Nine Inch Nails
Pet Shop Boys
Our Lady Peace
NERD
Cold War Kids
Mutemath
Mew
Datarock
Thunderheist
Couer de Pirate
Silver Starling
D'Urbervilles

Tickets go on sale starting Saturday. A weekend pass is $99. If you want to camp, it'll cost $100 per site (which you can fill up with as many folks as you like).

Well, I'm happy about this because it is only minutes away from my cottage... however... it really sucks that due to the garbage strike, our regular summer activities and festivals have been affected.

No thanks.

I think it's a good idea for the move for a change. The ferry strike may help this. It's also a good reason to go camping for a weekend. Ben Harper and Pet Shop Boys are catching my eye.
