Questions to ask potential roommates
View this Thread in Original format

I'm on the quest to find a new roommate for september and I have multiple people very interested. Some of them I have met and some of them I have not (someone from france and a couple students from different provinces).

I am not too worried about living with someone I havent met, I never met my last two roommates and things worked out VERY well.

To help me decide which person to pick I was thinking of creating a questionaire of about 5 questions to help figure out a bit more about them.

I was thinking...
1. What makes a good roommate?
2. What genres of music do you listen to? (as it would be great to find someone with common interests)
3. It's your day/night off what would you be doing in Toronto? (If you havent been to Toronto what would you like to see?)

I also wanted to ask a silly question to see what their personality is like.

Being TA I figured someone would be great at coming up with a silly question.

All help is much appreciated.

And if anyone is looking for a room in september let me know :)

-what is your frequency of flatulation?
-when engaged in coitus, how loud are you?
-are you a sound sleeper?
-what do you hate about shared accomodations?
-if you were a donut, what kind would you be and why?
-how many times have you locked yourself out of your hosue/car in your life? (this will give you an idea of how often you may need to help them in these situations. Also reveals if they're a putz)
-what is the word? (the only acceptable answer is "bird")
-what are your recreation habits/hobbies?

That's all that came to mind imediately.

More if I think of them.

& yes, those are in order of how they came to mind.

well first of all, you're there to live with them, but you don't have to become best friends :)

when I was looking for a roomie back last summer, all I needed was to interact with the person for few mins, talking about random stuff but no specifics.. basically taking it as it comes

I personally cared for more trivial things like - do you have a job? are you a party animal or you prefer to stay in? pets/no pets? bf/no bf? etc etc

I actually took my prospective roomie out for lunch for a 2nd meeting and that sealed the deal, to talk outside the apartment and not on the phone

Go with your gut, Tara, that's my advice :)

And good luck!

If you could have lunch with any three people, living or dead, who would they be?

2+2=___

^ yeah how useful these questions are down the road? sure, the person might have a good sense of humour, but...?

key questions imo, the opposite of "trivial" :p

It all depends on your personal pet peeves...

Tieing up the trash and emptying bathroom/office trash on occasion.
Replacing paper towels/tp/etc. when empty.
Leaving dirty dishes in the sink.
Cleaning up after yourself in shared areas.

In my mind, nothing worse than swinging home with surprise company and having the place look like .

lol basically less fun then "2+2=___?" :toothless

There is no question more fun than 2+2=___ :p

I have already asked the necessary questions. My little questionaire would be to people who have passed the 'are you normal and are you a good candidate test'

Matt you make me laugh so hard. Thank you!

I should ask a question about kitchens. I hate when people leave dirty pots in the sink for days :( Luckily we each have our own bathroom so I never have to worry about dirty gross sinks and toilets.

Thanks everyone for your suggestions so far :)
