“Don't let the bed bugs bite!”
Oasis Inn
Jul 15, 2009 | Trip type: Family Well, at first it looked like a basic hotel, good price, location not in the best part of town, but well connected, free parking, the rooms looked ok (bathroom not too great, but ok for thr price), thanks to a friendly neighbor even free wifi.
The bad surprise came after 2 nights. After the first night we noticed several stitches on our bodies. The second night we made sure there were no mosquitos in the room, yet we found even more stitches. We talked to the staff and got a new room. The third night in the new room was even worse. A closer look at the matresses revealed the problem: Bed bugs!!!
Up to now we didn't get any refund and still hope to get to talk to the manager at some point. We tried calling several times (on the sunday we left no person ich charge was reachable) |

Either that, or it's that mad surgeon who lurks in hotel rooms in the middle of the night! |

Hotels are the one thing you need to go through all the major sites to get the best deals. And farecast (now Bing Travel) is actually wrong a bit because they use sites that can't guarantee the rate sometimes. It's an "estimate" and then that travel site negotiates and if they can't get the deal they come back to you with others. I've done through it before and it was a hassle.
Anyhow, I would search hotels.com, orbitz, etc seperately. It's the ony area where a hotel my best $70 on site, but then $130 on the others. |

I always call the hotel directly after finding the best price out there. Most are eager to cut out the middleman (or woman) and meet, if not beat that price. Radisson LA was $180/night EDC weekend on their site, but $109 at Travelocity. A quick phone call to Radisson, and they beat it by 25% so I got $80/night! :)
The Chancellor Hotel in SF goes out of it's way to earn repeat customers, and the location and rooms are great...let's just say that I saved enough to upgrade my afterparty ticket to VIP and then some... :) I always contact the manager directly for the best deal. I'm so hooked, this will be my sixth year staying there! :D |

kayak.com and hotelscombined.com
each give you a list from all the major sites(travelocity,priceline,hotelbook,hotels.com, orbitz, cheaptickets, reservetravel, you guys get the picture)
I like hotels.com because they price match lower prices.
if its a hotel group that has a nice customer loyalty(kimpton 7 stays, = 1 free night) i call them directly and they match prices too.
if its a one off hotel spot, i go with hotels.com because for every 10 nights of qualified stays ($40 rate minimum) then you get 1 free night(up to $400 hotel)
so in theory you can stay at the goodnite inn Buena park for $40 a total of 10 times and then stay at the Mandarin Oriental in SF for free.
right now its either the hotel mark twain($69/night) or Harbor Court hotel($96/night) or if things fall thru and i head up solo my friends place in Potrero hill.
still checking travelzoo and the travelsites a couple times a week, if anything comes up, i'll post it. |

I checked hotel mark twain earlier and all sold out. :)
I prob won't be able to get a hotel until mid-September if I have to pre-pay for it....prob gonna be screwed by that point! |

yeah, kayak and bing/farecast are the same thing basically -- hell, at one time they looked almost identical until this bing makeover microsoft gave Farecast. It's just I have seem them wrong enough on hotels (up until the end of March, I was booking hotels 2-3 weekends a month) where I'd actually check some of the other hotels on orbitz or expedia or whatever and it'd actually be cheaper than what farecast said they had them at. It doesn't happen often, but enough for me to spend my time.
For flights, I usually just check farecast and then check Southwest seperately. |
