It depends on the mood for me, but often the melodies comes first.

Is it just me who start from the beginning of the song and just go from there?

+1 Melody first.. haha..

But it does depend (even on such things as what kind of track-writing comes more naturally to you). Myself, I just usually like being inspired by a cool melody line more often than other tracks.
xphonix
melody first here as well usually

i think drums are the most important element of a solid groove. at least the way i work is, if the drums don't move me in a 'dance' track, then not much else will

i have only finished one song of those who i started with melody.
im sick and tired of the whole LOOOONG before ive have anything structure ready. I must start with the groove (drumloops, baselines, kick, some efex or easy synths).

Hmm, you and I seem to be quite similar in quite a lot of ways when it comes to production it seems :wtf:

I used to try and start with the lead first but I always struggled building a track around it. These days I have more success starting from scratching and building up.

im moving away from melodies anyway now adays, i just like to make a few easy synths to fit the groove (two three, or maybe even four diferent easy leads) being able to make a whole track without any breaks and without being boring: intro, groove, part1, part2, part3, repeat, groove, outro. easy.

At first I was sceptical, but then I thought "why not give it a shot?" And indeed, I'd never made music like this before. Wow, is all I can say.

i always have an idea for a chord progression or perhaps a melody before ever even opening up my DAW

percs are always last, but solely because i use a 2 bar kick/hat loop as a base for help with timing and constructing the melody and then completely re-do it when the melody is transcribed in the software.

I suck at melodies so its all about the percs for me. ANd melodies really dont inspire me nearly as much as a clean, solid and cleaver percussive track. Ill load a drum machine with half a dozen kicks, another with hi hat type electro sounds, perhaps load up a synth with a noise generator and a band pass. Ill play around with that and slowly add the bass and other stuff. But it is always a back and forth thing, only once I have added the bass do I know what is wrong with the percussion.
