As with most everything, there is no golden rule.
What I *usually* do is start with my chord progressions which are usually strings and pads related. These progressions are not written in stone. I usually make about 6 chords and obviously don't end up using them all. I've found that once I select a key that making melodies becomes easier. I also like to get a basic kick going and my sub bass and then I jam out on my keyboard until I hear something I like and try to go from there. That's just me though, everybody is different. I'd suggest trying this though.
As for octave changes, yes I do use them. Again, not with every song and it just depends. I hate to say go experiment, lol. If it feels right then do it, it is not rocket science. I hate to say it, but use your ears and judgment. This is where the artist in you comes out. |
