Not to mention that they will say they repaired they didn't. |

I hear this term "tune up" all the time... WTF IS A TUNE UP? Do the mechanics hook into your ECU and tune the maps or something? |

$500 for a tuneup? lol learn to do that yourself boy!
i have an awesome mechanic. been going to him for like 10 years. family owned business and he's got the same guys working for him for the past 15 years too, which says a lot to me. he's obviously a good boss and treats his employees well, etc...
i've taken my car to him in the past thinking something major was broken and i was prepared to spend $$$ and he would find the problem and it would just be something little and i'd pay $80 and be like, "oh ok. thanks". he could have totally ripped me off and he never does. he has even let me pay him in 2 separate payments for a few big jobs he did for me.
but nowadays my boyfriend is my mechanic which works out very well too lol |

| My friend went to the dealer to change brakes on 03 BMW. They wanted to charge him $1000.... |

| My power steering fluid started leaking, so I had a hard time turning my car (2001 Nissan Maxima), and it sucked ass, so I took it into a mechanic near us, Michaels Tires. They looked at it and said it would be $3400 bucks to fix, so we said that and took it to a friend of ours, who proceeded to fix it for $300 instead. |

This is nothing new. Brake jobs at the dealer are ridiculously expensive. |

I have a 2005 Volkswagen GTI which just went past warranty. AC was only blowing hot air, so I assumed it was just a freon |
Cars like this, always have forums dedicated to them. In this day and age if you have such tools - use them and become an educated consumer. If you know exactly what is wrong with your car, chances are you can find somebody else who has had that repair done and get a price quote from them. That was you have a ballpark figure and can estimate whether or not your getting ripped off :).
As for the OP...wow, the dumbest thing you can do with a mechanic is just leave him with the car and say what you said. If your car is safe to operate drive to several of different shops. Mechanics are usually in clusters. Go to a couple, get opinions, quotes and bargain. Offer them cash. All of that being said, go to a mechanic you trust so that you don't have to deal with all that BS. |

However, brakes are one of the things you really should be spending money on (the other is good tires) instead of looking to save a buck. My car (though well maintained) might not be the best car out there, but i always make sure that the brakes are soo good that the car stops on a dime, and that the tires match the brakes (no sense having good brakes if the car will skid because the tires dont have the grip). |

Buy a Honda and forget about it, plus the dealership here is a pretty good, they tend to not you over as much and I have never had a problem with the work they have done there.
Also, regular maintenance is the key. If you go in every year and have them do the normal tune ups and checks and stuff like that you know the fee and it will keep things in top notch order.
Going "blah blah I don't want to think about it" is really irresponsible. You're car is a very complex piece of machinery, I know this sounds gay, but you need to really listen to it and make sure its sounding the same, driving the same, etc. Sometimes I turn off the radio and just drive in different situations and make sure that everything is feeling and sounding the same.
I have a 2003 Pilot (bought in 2002) it was my dads car, he put 110,000 miles on it before I got it in 2006 from him, I have put on another 30,000 miles. Regular check ups every year and it hums along nicely and has never had a major problem (besides a couple busted struts, but that was from me going over speed bumps in the parking garage too fast :p). |

Agreed, however, the prices they are charging are still outrageous. You don't need to do a full caliper rebuild EVERY ing time you bring it in for a brake job. |
