Spacious pads/strings

I'm having trouble getting the particular spacious/airy quality out of my pads that I want. It's the sort of sound that guys like Vince Watson often use in deep techno... the sound obviously has a lot of reverb, delay, and stereo panning, but it's still rather up front and clear, the 'verb isn't very cavernous. I put a sample up on soundcloud, you can hear the pad in question come in around the 30 second mark:

I can upload a few more samples but I think that one is adequate to begin with. Any advice for creating such a sound? My attempts usually end up with a reverb/stereo spread that is too cavernous, if that makes any sense.

maybe turn down the stereo separation just a bit, or change the phase position from post to pre? (this is using FL studio's stereo enhancer, i dunno about other plugins)

i've also found that if you with chorus efx you can get that nice, head-wrapping stereo separation without necessarily using a stereo enhancer.

i also tend to shy away from too much reverb with pads, most of the time if i add too much it doesn't really add to the "separated" sound you're looking for, it ends up just muddying the mix to where i lose headroom. so i guess what i'm trying to say is, maybe your stereo separation settings are just right, but you have too much reverb which makes the sample less clear
