One sub or two?

I'm thinking of getting a pair of Yamaha HS80M monitors. They're very well priced and will be an improvement on my Behringer Truths.
Then to sort out the lower end I've seen the Yamaha HS10W Sub.
Do many of you use add-on subs? If so do you use one speaker centered or two in stereo configuration. Seeing as the lower frequencies are centered in mono it should be ok with one speaker? or...

you absolutely need at least 4...
j/k...I think you'll be much better off if you start out upgrading the monitors only...then if you still feel the need get a sub...
or get a monitoring set with a sub ... it will be better "collaborating" with the other speakers. |

I REALLY don't think you need a sub with those monitors. Their bass response is pretty great and I like them a lot but I could not buy them because they would have too much bass for my small studio area.
Maybe you just like listening to music with a lot of bass, but bear in mind they are monitors, not hifi speakers so I don;t see the point with subs unless your mixing in surround. |

| I have HS80's, you won't need a sub trust me;-) I use mine at only about 60% and they thump! |

| I considered adding the sub to my HS80Ms because my room absorbs a lot of the bass frequencies leaving me to over-compensate for the lows, but I've found that most subs just seem to add more mud than anything else. I may still try the sub someday if I ever come across a used one (i.e., so I don't lose much money on it if I don't like it). |

If you're planning on getting a sub, for gods sake don't buy 8" monitors. That is just retarded. 6-7" monitors are the LEAST AND THE MOST that you should get, if you plan on pairing them with a sub.
If you are getting a sub, you need monitors that can extend below 80-90hz with minimal drop-off. 5" monitors will not do this. 6" monitors will. 8" monitors will, but will also sacrifice mid range in doing so. Thus, it makes absolutely no sense to buy 8" monitors and a sub, when 6" monitors and a sub will give you far better coverage of the frequency range.
The decision is simple.
1. 8" monitors if you don't want to buy a sub and don't mind sacrificing some mid range.
2. 6" monitors if you do want to buy a sub or do mind sacrificing some mid range. |

Extremely good points in this post but I don't think I agree with the statement sacrificing mid range on 8" monitors. Certainly the HS80's have good mid range AND bass response. The Quested VS2108 are another set of 8" monitors that great mid range. I think cheap 8" monitors have below standard mid range, but I can name half a dozen 8" monitors that I'd be happy to mix on.
I do think that you'll find more monitors in the 6/7" size with good midrange that in the 8" range, especially at the lower price brackets, but IMO to say 8" drivers don't have good mid range is not quite accurate. |

| I have the Yamaha HS80M's without a sub and do not feel I need one at all. They have plenty of low end. I'm honestly blown away by how accurate they are. I've often wondered if the sub that is offered with them would actually take away from the true reference. You will not be disappointed with these monitors, I can guarantee that. I wouldn't stress too much over the subs. Again, they pack plenty of punch by themselves. |

sorry, but for full range monitoring 8" main drivers still can use a sub.
most subwoofers have a variable crossover so you can tweak your lowpass to the curve of your monitors
if you don't mix THX then a 80hz crossover is not mandatory :D
So hence you don't have to loose any mid.
I would say a subwoofer is even essential if you want full control of those ultralow sidechained sinebasses, or just want a general feel on how your track sounds full range
also note that highpassing your monitors on i.e. 40hz rather than let them play non high passed also increases resolution and "air" on oyur main monitors since they don't need to work that hard on louder (>75db)mixing volumes. regarding mono or stereo, as long as oyu have a sub with stereo passthrough, you can suffice with 1 sub.
if your sub is only Mono (no stereo low level passthrough) you will need 2 OR feed 1 unit after your monitors with an Y adapter. you do want to make sure that your sub receives BOTH L&R signal to avoid phasing and SPL issues . |
