in an interview, deadmau5 said this:

"i like notes that don't land on quanti's to a 16th grid for a bar"

what does that mean?

I imagine the 16th grid to a bar means the 1/16th scale on a piano role or sequencer, and he's saying he likes playing notes that don't robotically line up to such precise subdivisions, like sequenced music usually would. Which would be ironic, given how utterly prescribed the notes are in a Deadmau5 melody.

Everything I've just said could be utterly wrong, though. More context, please.

if it is sequenced couldn't he just sequence the notes where he wants ?

Only by playing the notes himself, as far as I know. A piano roll or similar will always line up precisely to some subdivision of the time signaturee.

Just add swing or dont quantize the notes. Most likely though he plays the notes by hand and they end up exactly as he played it. Its can create a very effective sound.. just like a drummer plays drums or a guitarist plays guitar.. it will never be 100% spot on, the human ear likes the subtle differences as opposed when everything is completely sync.

Most rhythm heard in songs are actually humanized to create the effect as if a drummer played the drums.

It means he likes when they land on quanti's to an 8th grid for a bar.
