some of my top tunes from the magical year of 1989 - if '88 was the year when the raving spark was first felt, '89 is when i caught fire - this is my little tribute to that great year - there are loads of great tunes i could have picked, 'sueno latino', debbie malones 'rescue me', patti day's 'right before your eyes' - this is more stripped down, dj/dancefloor stuff.
having turned 40 this year i came to realise something - the tunes contained here have formed part of my soul - although i've been working on some of the combinations for a few months now, some i've been working on for 20 years - so you could argue that this mix is 20 years in the making.
if '88 was all about detroit and chicago, then '89 was also about italy, belgium, canada, germany, new york in a very big way and of course the uk. although in the 90's dance music ended up splitting into sub and then further sub genres, in '89 dance music was still a single entity, you could have heard any of these tunes played out in the same club, all over the world - if you lived through the '88-'89 period you can appreciate the seizmic shift in dance culture that took place.
i have deliberately chosen to finish on two tunes from the uk. why? simple really, we invented jungle/drum & bass.
