I'm moving to NYC...

...no not the song by the Wombats.

I'm moving to NYC from Chicago to start work in the city. I just got a job doing news production for one of the network HQ's there. Unfortunately, they aren't paying much, so I'm stuck trying to find an apt that's affordable somewhere in Manhattan, because I don't want to have to commute two hours a day.
I've been looking on C/L but thus far have only found scam after scam after scam.
My arrival date is the 10th and I start work the 24th, so I wanna get this taken care of asap. Does anyone know of anyone renting an affordable apt/could point me in the right direction? I'm just sick of the wild goose chases.

what's your price range?

We should make a price range sticky in NYTA ;)

lol I think we have answered this question about a thousand times, eh? :stongue:

If you wanna live alone in a 1 BR, and spend less than $18-2000, you will *probably* have to stick to above 100th street. or maybe a few select places in LES.

That price will surely give you different sizes, the nicer the neighborhood is (ie: in spanish harlem/washington heights the neighborhood is CRAP but will give you a big place....in the Upper West Side, the neighborhood is nice but you will get a tiny place.....)

you have to decide which is more important: location, or size?

If you are willing to room with someone, there are many more places you can go for $2000 a room.

i dont know about you but craigslist works pretty well for me...i've found all my apartments (5) through craigslist.

i just locked a decent sized studio on 93rd st. bet. lexington and 3rd for 1,300. it normally goes between 1450 to 1550.

why don't you sublet a place for a month then while you are in the city you can do some real apartment hunting? that way you'll have time to get a feel of where you want and can afford to live. my biggest mistake moving here was jumping into a roommate situation before i really weighed my options or really knew where i would want to be. i came for 4 days to do the apt hunt thing and if i had just subletted for a while i'm sure i could have gotten a much nicer place. i paid way too much for what i got.

I was hoping i'd only end up out $1000, but the more I look it seems upping my budget to $1.5-1.6K is more reasonable.

I think you should be more open to Brooklyn and Queens. If you are on the Q in Brooklyn, for example, you get to midtown in a half hour. When I lived in the West Village, it took me the same amount of time to get to Midtown east for work. Traffic is relative and you should also consider that when looking. There are a lot of cl scams that sell you lists and some go as far as pretending to be landlords. We found our place in the Jewish Press, an Orthodox newspaper. The apartments we have seen listed were in all areas and the rents are reasonable. They want employed people or students with support, you don't have to be Jewish or Orthodox. Our place has a view of lower Manhattan, everything is new, and it is $1150 for 700 sq ft. That is typical of their apartments.

yeah, just make sure you're not caught in the middle of a hassidic street fight over who wears the best hats!!

I second Brooklyn / Queens. It only takes an hr to get anywhere in the city via subway and the prices are much better. Anywhere in the city is 1/4 the size for the same price. If you MUST live in Manhattan I'd say plan to spend atleast 1800 - 2000 for somewhere decent downtown. Better to wait until you get a girlfriend and move in together lol

Dude, Long Island City! You can find a place with a roommate for 1100 - 1300.

ok but you are still not giving enough info: do you want a place on your own? studio? 1 BR? Do you mind going to the boroughs?

At $15-1600, would get you a roomate or studio in manhattan, or a larger place in the boroughs. For a one bedroom in that range, you would def have to go above the 100's OR pay a broker to find you a place......Brokers will often find you a nicer place for the price, but charge you 4x's the rent for fees and downpayment and such.

PS: I lot of people live in Jersey City/Hoboken, which is a much quicker commute than some places in brooklyn/queens. I know bc I have two friends who live in each place. You can get a decent sized place with a 20 minute commute. Just a suggestion.

I don't really want to live in the other boroughs for the simple fact that I don't want to commute too far. I'm looking for a studio/1br, something in a decent neighborhood.
My work is in Midtown, so anything not extremely far from there / easily accessible by public transportation is ideal.

Am I being naive?
