I think its ridiculous to talk about orchestra as a genre in this context.
As far as traditionally EDM goes, I still believe good Trance is the hardest. It requires more complex layering, more harmony, etc.
With techno you can break chord and scale rules left and right and you usually don't have 3 different layers of music going at once like you do with Trance.
The same goes for House....I find house incredibility easy to make. It's almost a joke. Of course some house is tough, but there are hardly any rules. Just stay in key and create an upbeat, or deep, or whatever style, house track.
I feel the same way about Electro although some Electro is finally starting to incorporate melody (aka difficulty increaser) in it for a nice "Electrance" feel. Electro used to be just a wankers trying to see who could create the "coolest" sound - Thank god it's slowly getting away from that.
I'd rather the new indie disco stuff right up there with Trance. In my opinion, anytime you've got multiple layers running which is common in Trance and ni-disco, the difficulty increases dramatically. The engineering becomes MUCH more difficult and you have to worry about everything harmonizing perfectly. That's rarely the case with Techno, House, whatever.

Psy is not hard to make imho. Its mostly sounds/noise accompanied by a nice progression. Ive been on cosmic flower CDs a few times.
As for Orchestra, I say its harder because it tells a story, edm doesn't tell a story, edm is mostly music people listen to and dance to in order to get a quick thrill. Myself I don't dance, and I strive to make music that conveys a scene rather than a whole story. And its difficult enough. |

It is really the simplest way to convey music from the start of the common practice period to today. Classical music is vague in that depending on who you are talking to , they will assume you mean something else.
As far as what is hard ? it is relative to the amount of people doing it and the level of competition. Orchestral music seems hard to most but the people doing it have been training since they were little kids. I doubt a producer doing EDM who has 20 years of experience is any less qualified at his/her craft than the classical guys.
So many kids in my undergrad could barely send email and had no idea what production is and even most of them were awful in terms of what is needed for a classical/orchestral composer. I know both and i'm incredibly handsome. |

what I consider hard/difficult is when you blend electronica with rock (as in multiple non-electronic tracks). it requires two quite different mindsets mixwise, arrangementwise and productionwise combined to work (think along the lines of Nine Inch Nails). Anyway, I strive to be proficient in anything I do musically, so I'll get there :D
It's a pretty subjective question anyway. |

| Jazz, hiphop/rap, and DnB has always been the hardest for me to do. Trance is what I've been making since the start so now it's pretty easy for me once I get into the flow of things. |

I believe trance is the EASIEST genre to produce unless you're an idiot for melodies/harmony.
the hardest in electronic music might be stuff like ed banger / turbo (labels). |

shouldn't the question really be regarding succeeding in that genre ? Asking how hard it is to make something is stupid. Anyone can make any style of music. Will it be good in the eyes of the people that will make it possible to make a living ?

progressive trance/house beacuse:
- it needs to be groovy, driving and flowing with only few elements
- it needs to be kept interesting eventhough its monotone and repeatative
- it needs to be memorable without any big main themes or elements
- it needs to sound awesome without being overproduced
- it needs to sound dirty without distortion/clipping
- it needs to climax without adding anything special
- it needs to be epic without cheese
- it needs a dj-friendly intro/outro without being boring or typical
- it needs ing awesome transitions and efex to avoid it getting boring
- structure needs to be perfect so it keeps the good parts long enough and not too long to avoid it being boring and to keep the deepness
- its the best genre ever
