The Legendary...

STEVE "SILK" HURLEY - Chicago Ill.

Truly a man of all musical seasons, Chicago-based producer / remixer / songwriter / DJ, and now four-time Grammy Nominee Steve "Silk" Hurley has more than proven in his 20-year plus career that he is a musical force to be reckoned with. His Grammy Nomination in January of 2004 for his remix of Brandy's "What About Us" is just another testament to his longevity as a producer, and yet another confirmation that “Silk” is here to stay. Having spanned the sometimes-limiting borders of contemporary Black music, moving freely from his Club/House music roots to his R&B/Funk roots, his musical scope as a producer has thus far remained unrivaled.

In a time when mom and pop's are closing up shop and music is easier purchased at home on your laptop, stores like Beatlab have become few and far between. The record store in the music community is like the water cooler in the corporate world. Music lovers, DJ's, & friends went to record stores not only to stay up to date with the latest releases, but also to stay up on the latest local gossip, upcoming events, as well as connecting with other like-minded individuals.

Additionally, with the current state of our economy, it's no wonder the little guys are falling off the map left and right. When Beatlab first opened a year ago, after many other local record stores had closed, many were not only surprised but shocked (including myself).

I say all this to say, we must cherish the efforts of those like Beatlab, who take risks in order to remain a part of the artistic and culturally significant fabric of our city. This Thursday we celebrate not only Beatlab's effort, but all those who continue to keep the candle burning in Atlanta.

This event is free to the public though we will be taking donations at the door which will go directly to Beatlab to keep things moving along. Whether you shop at Beatlab on the regular, are friends with the DJ's involved, or appreciate like minded business owners around town, we look forward to seeing you on the dancefloor!

I'd actually loved to have gone to this had I known about it earlier and wasn't working early the next morning :p

This show is one helluva surprise. I'm sneaking out of work to see this, and I don't even get out that often! Now I just wish there was some way I could teleport my Brandy "What About Us" vinyl with the Hurly remix over here for the man himself to sign...:D
