Acanac

I have been with them for over 3 years, and I love their services. Yes the $20/month is an intro price, what the do you expect? Each DSL reseller has to pay bell $20/month/account. SO in the first year, they are actually loosing money on you. After the first year, it goes back to the same price, but you get some extra features that I like.

- work around for bell throttling
- free online pc
- free online storage
- tech support isn't run by a bunch of idiots

I currently work for an ISP, and we resell some of bell's DSL (dropping the service soon), and I can say from an industry point of view, I have a lot of confidence in Acanac.

Their Admin Paul, is a great guy and really keeps you informed. If you head over to their forum, they tell you about maintenance, they keep you informed about how bell is trying to each and every user.

They are also in the process of installing their own equipment (in partnership with Tecksavvy). So hopefully within the next year they will be offering ADSL2+ (Up to 25Mbps).

So would you recommend them?

Haha yes. But with the tarrif application/acceptance against residential DSL, there may be no point of switching.

http://www.crtc.gc.ca/eng/archive/2009/2009-484.htm

Either way, I would much rather give my money to a smaller ISP that I trust, rather than the greedy idiots at bell.

Remember that Bell has systamatically crippled its own DSL service because:
1) they over sold their network, and could not cope with the load youtube, p2p, web 2.0 put on it.
2) they want you to buy their satellite service and realise that they are loosing money by people using the web to get content.

They are quite transparent, but the average joe doesn't put this stuff together.

so are they getting rid of dsl? how's your download speeds?
Orko
I get 630KBps down and 81KBps up.

Remember guys, the speeds are very dependant on the source of the file. Plus, most residential DSL providers peer with Cogentco, which has very ty connection speeds. But, you cannot get away from that at home.

When I connect to a trusted, fast host, i get those speeds no prob.

where abouts in to are you located? just wondering cause those are very solid speeds with a dsl service.
Orko
Thats at my mom's house in sauga (streetsvile). It is located about 2Km away from the CO. I got those same speeds in Toronto, again I was within 2KM of the CO.

I used to have a link to a site which told you the nearest office, so you could see your distance, but I have not been able to find it for some time.

My line can actually do ADL2+. Bell put me on it a little while ago by accident, and i was getting over 1MBps doing torrents. I just rapped that connection for when I had it, and they finally saw it and dropped me back down to earth.

lets not forget your distance to the CO and the quality of your in-house wiring affects your overall connection speed as well.

http://www.telcodata.us/telcodata/telco

although that doesn't tell you the whole story as the wire doesn't go directly to your house in a straight line. and you also might be hooked up to a remote which bell has been installing the past couple of years.
