John Digweed @ Stereo, July 5th (pg. 4)

For the 40 minutes I was there John played really good. But the sound was too loud and Stereo system is old and crappy so it was only distorsion. The bass are good on that system but the mid-bass and the high are so ty, I don't understand why people like this system. I think people don't really know sound and it's just about rumours that this system is good so people now think the system is good. ahahah

Now, let me clear up some things about that night.. I was there all night, so I can give a pretty good point of view on sound and crowd.

It is true that the turnout was a bit dissappointing.. yes, it wasn't packed! But, JF, there was at least 600-700 people (75% capacity).. I think the reason for such a low turnout was two-fold:
1) Not enough promotion time (they only had a week to promote it)
2) There was some confusion over where to buy advance tickets for the show.. and many people, who weren't able to buy some in advance, decided not to come because they didnt want to dish out 50-60$ (it happenned with a couple of my friends)

As far as sound is concerned, I think that something went wrong with the system at around 5 or 6AM. The sound was comming out perfect for Skinner and the first part of Digweed's set.. Clear, crisp, etc.. But I think that john tried pushing the system too hard to its limits and must have broken something in there, because after 6AM or something like that, some sounds weren't comming as clear as they would normally (as JFL noted), but it was still a lot better than the Sona system and the Aria system (well.. from about 2-3 months ago, i havent been there since then.. and I heard that it got upgraded so the new Aria system might be better; I cant say!).

Btw, overall, it was fantastic night.. great vibe in the club.. a lot of smily faces.. great music.. etc

The drive from Buffalo was sooooooo worth it.

Tribal, funky, progressive, breaks, bumpin, shoes can't stop moving tunage all night from the master himself.

Oh, and I forgot to mention....he played 8 hours!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yes, you read right, 8 hours of heaven. It reminded me back when I saw him the first time at Twilo, where his set just kept escalating and peaking, only to do it all over again. (my motto with sex btw )

It was also very fun sneaking into the dj booth and seeing the master at work from only a few feet away. He was so nice and humble.....I got a nice MMII poster signed. I also got to see what 10+ vodka cran's can do to a dj..hehe. For example, he had a picture taken with someone in the booth and almost fell over from the flash. Also, after taking a pee break he came back and almost lifted the needle of the record that was playing...hehe.

Montreal was fun, sucked not being able to read any signs, but it was fun trying! Digweed lived up to every one of my expectations, as he has all 4 times I have been lucky enough to see him live. Counting down the days till Aug. 5th.

8 hours!

this is the first time in a year that a huge dj comes to montreal and it was pain in the ass for gettin' advance tickets ... shame

the Aria sound system is simply amazing , u should check it , it's the only one my ears support , they are allergic to Turbo sound haha :)

I arrived there with a couple of friends at around 1:30AM, planning to check out Stereobar for the first time, but it turns out that you had to have the VIP ticket to go downstairs.. since we didn't, we ended up going to the Main Room directly.. Strangely, no music was playing.. I think that Tom Skinner started playing at around 2 or 2:30AM.. and until then, there was some weird jazzy ambient music playing.. Anyway, a weird beginning to a great night!

Tim Skinner's set was a good warm-up set for Digweed. he played some great percussive house that sounded great on the system and just got the crowd to start moving and packing the floor. Nothing to write home about.. but he played his role great!

Then, at 4:15AM or so, the one that everyone wanted to hear finally shows up.. After starting in a mellower, chillier type of way with many breaks, he started rocking the house with some banging beats. I would have never believed that Digweed could play so hard!!! Usually, Sasha is the one that takes care of driving the crowd nuts while Diggers prefers to play the mellower beats (which is the reason why tag teams with these two are just magical!).. Anyway, at around 6AM, I definitely noticed the sound getting distorted and a lot louder. I think that Diggers was trying to push the system to its limits and it showed. But, still, the sound came out pretty good... granted, it was getting harder to have conversations on the floor and my ears were starting to buzz.. but, he was getting the whole crowd to dance energetically. Finally, at approx 10:30AM, after my legs couldn't carry me anymore and that I had to leave for some prior engagements (some family gathering later in the day!), we jetted!

SETUP: Nothing out of the ordinary.. Some regular Stereo decorations (the stars hanging and disco ball).. Plus, a huge projection screen at the back that went into oblivion as soon as Diggers went on the decks..

MUSIC: Unbelievable.. Even though the sound wasn't as clear and crisp as usual, the track selection was amazing. I recognized many tracks on the spot, but can't think of that many now.. His mixing was up there, with a rare slight up here and there. I think that the loudness of the sound and the vibrations it caused made his vinyls skip 3 or 4 times (or what is something else that caused that? I am not sure, I am not a DJ!). I wish I would have been able to stay until the end.. but couldn't!

CROWD: What can I say and not say about that? Even though Stereo was only 70-80% full, the vibe there was unbelievable. Lots of smiles, lots of beautiful people, lots of music lovers (truly enjoying the tracks and constantly facing the DJ booth). Met lots of cool people...

Anyway, overall it was a fantastic night.. Definitely better than the Delta Heavy Tour where we were packed like sardines.. Thats two times this year I catch Diggers and I will make it three in September in Ibiza :D :D

Ciao,
Moose

im sorry man, but John's passion is not about playing mellow stuff lol its the other way around, Sasha is the melody, John is all about the beats ;):)
