| you can't compare those synths. if you want analog sounds, DCAM is a big step forward. there's no other softsynth which sounds as analog. but if you want pad/athmospheric stuff you're better with absynth. |

That's quite a statement. Not that I'm saying you're a homer, but do you own synth squad and do you think you might be giving it a little too much credit or is it really that good. How many voices are we looking at here for pads. I don't need evolving soundscapes, just pads. I bet DCAM can do them well if it's as analog as you say it is.
Also, if you own it, do you have any complaints? Any bugs? Are you eagerly awaiting an update to fix some problems? |

Read all the discussions about the famous 'faxing berlin'-style Deadmau5 synths. A lot of people where claiming it was hardware, so perhaps the statement itself is not that bold statement ;)
I've had one of the DCAM plugins crashing once, but luckily it crashed in a very nice manor without corrupting or changing the project at all. |

So what about the sound? I'm thinking of picking it up today. |

"Sounds analog"
I am more convinced than ever that this term has lost all meaning and that no two people have the same interpretation, especially since it seems that the majority of people making this claim nowadays have barely touched an analog synth, and the fact that most analog synths can sound different from each other. I think the new interpretation is irrelevant to the circuitry/code being processed behind the scene and goes more like this:
"sounds analog" = it sounds good.
"sounds digital" = it sounds bad. |

well, this synths shouldn't be that buggy as they are in development since years. beside that if you want to hear how they sound just listen to deadmau5 tracks. the synth sounds in e.g. 'Faxing Berlin' and 'I Remember' are from the Strobe synth. (and many other releases from him aswell) |
"Faxing Berlin" sound is from a Juno 106, according to Deadmau5 himself on this forum.

don't worry cryo, i know exactly what analog means and sound like. and yes dcam sounds really good.

Sorry, my comments weren't intended to be aimed specifically at you thecYrus, just the general over-use and misuse of that phrase. I'm sure you know what I mean! ;) |

I don't remember everything that vividly, but a couple of his hit track leads used dcam plugins and those tracks where similar to faxing berlin. He talked about using the DCam plugins in MusicTech magazine a couple of months ago.
IŽll try and look it up tomorrow |

| So I picked this up tonight, and so far I like what I am hearing. I'm only going through the presets and doing some minor tweaking, but I like it. Strobe is definitely up my alley, as it seems more like a "classic" vintage synth emulation. Its actually the first software synth I have used that has managed to shake my walls with bass, to which I have not had another software synth do that before. I can see why others are calling it such a faithful recreation of analogue hardware. I'm getting sounds out of it that are on par with my LP, and none of my other soft synths do that including Minimonsta. |

To get back on this as promised ;).
Futuremusic issue 208, December 2008.
| quote: |
There seems to be a particular synth that runs through the album...
"Well there are loads of synths and different software and hardware used to make the album"
Yes, but there's something. A tone, that runs through the whole records...
"Yeah, [laughs] that's a new synth from FXpansion that isn't out yet - I've been alpha testing their synths for years."
|
...[calls fxpansion for permission to speak]...
| quote: |
"There are three new synths from FXpansion's forthcoming D-CAM Synth Squad collection. They're Cypher, Amber and Strobe and these synths are absolutely ing amazing. All the big pads in I Remember and Faxing Berlin were all done in the FXpansion Strobe with just a touch of reverb." |
He probably said it was a Juno due to the fact he wasn't allowed to talk about the D-CAM package here on TA ;). |
