All this talk about viruses (pg. 2)

My suggestion is to learn how to properly use an external MIDI instrument with your DAW. Your options for this are basically Logic, Cubase, and Sonar. No others I can think of now will properly support an external instrument.

Learn how to use one on your DAW (switch DAWs if necessary) and get a Virus B if you really want a Virus. The TI's VSTi functionality works decently well, but is more of a pain in the ass than it's worth.

In case my avatar doesn't give it away, yes I love my Virus (Polar TI1). It's not perfect but it is the most versatile synth I have ever owned in terms of both sound and peformance, and I've owned a LOT of synths over the past 30 years. It's popularity is no accident. That's not to say that it's "the best", but if I had to choose one "desert island" synth, it'd be my Polar without a doubt just because of its versatility. But, if you take away the TI feature, I'd probably prefer my Nord 3 or possibly even Gladiator 2.

latency issues, always drops parts etc... MEH.

now 5 years of paying off a struggling instrument :(

Who the EF takes out a 5 year loan for a synth?

I was one of the very first guys in my country to own a Virus back in 1998.

The Virus A (as it's called now) is probably the synth that made my career take off on its own.

I got to play a lot with the B and C versions at a friend's studio. They're amazing.

The success of the Virus series lies in its core synthesis structure, and probably also because they made the right decisions at the right time with the hardware: multi-out, external audio gating, a vocoder, etc... To sum it up, I'd say a perfect combination of vintage thoughts with grounbreaking/futuristic features.

Before the virus came out, it was really hard to find a subtractive synth that was capable of that much. You had a JP8000 limited in polyphony and character features (distortion etc...) but with the Unison.

Then you had the Yamaha AN1-X. A horrible piece of crap if you ask me.

Then you had the nord lead. Very good sounds but terribly limited features.

...And you had also the Novation nova series. The Supernova was seen as the Virus' strongest competitor. But the Novation people kinda missed a train with interesting features that never made it sound-wise for most people.

The Virus remains probably the best hardware subtractive synth line ever made, alongside with some of the latest analog revival heroes such as moog and DSi.

To be honest, in those days of Subtractive frenzy... I'd go for PCM synths. But that's anoher debate.

The SuperNova / SuperNova II is a weapon.

I think more a case of they dropped the ball on advertising, hype and/or distribution...

Edit: Lolo, not a dig at you, just my opinion on the SuperNova's.

Supernova is probably everything the virus should be in terms of sound. Only judging by samples people have sent me though...

I see so mixed opinions but generally its the best all rounder and its especially good for trance. I guess I would have to listen to one ( i probably have many times without knowing)

everyone has em dude, you would definately have heard the in a LOT of songs!

i think they're really good, even tho mine screws up a lot the versatility of the machine is really great

the sound is worth the price-tag imo

It has some issues, but I love my TI. It's capable of some truly amazing sounds.

You definitely don't *need* one, but I don't think you'll regret buying it either if you have the cash to spare.
