massives used to run even later. it wasn't uncommon for one to run past 9am nevermind the smaller parties that would seemingly never end. some of the best music was heard well after the sun came up (or during). Doran and his fabled sunrise sets come to mind but the most memorable sets were from house icons like Doc Martin, Derrick Cater or Mark Farina. They all had vinyl and style that could turn a room full of rave zombies into smiling dancing kids. it was a spiritual experience. |
Why is 4am the normal end time now? |

| I remember going to raves in the Forest where they would last til the next day. Awww the good old days of the LA Scene. Oh well, time to move on. |

Different cities have different cut off times. It's all about city regulations. |

Because then we'd have at least an hour to get the hell out of the club, drive home, and get on the bed before the sun rises at 6AM. |

| i think for NYE (actually for any night) you can petition the city of LA for an extended closing time. not 100% positive about that though... |

city governments cracking down on raves starting around the turn of the century. trouble had been brewing for a while because of the rise in popularity of E. i think the catalyst was the four kids dying (driving off the side of the mountain) after JuJu Beats '99 imo... things began to change after that. The low point was when the RAVE act was introduced which basically labeled a rave a crackhouse (not far from the truth though lol) and held the venue owners/promoters liable for people using drugs/overdosing at their parties....
seemed like there was a lot of uncertainty as to how strict the new laws would be enforced but ultimately it didn't amount to much more than blowing smoke.
as mentioned at one point shows at The Orange Show couldn't go past 2am but in the end money talks and they allowed events to go till 4am.
also as Cool1g noted, you probably could file a special permit to get your event to go till 6am but im sure it costs exponentially more on top of other restrictions (i assume) which deters most promoters...
it all worked out for our generation though since in our younger years we could last till 8am but now that we are a bit older we are staring at the clock waiting for 4am so our tired asses can go home and sleep! :o |
