I am looking to move to Seattle in January 2010, and I have a few questions:
1. What is the demand for computer science majors in the city like? Would I be better off looking in the surrounding area? I just finished my Bachelors of Science in this, but I am willing to work most anything temporarily to make ends meet.
2. What are some decent spots for a younger person to live?
2a. Any chance they could be listed by rent costs?
I can't stand the area I live in now and am dead set on moving by that date. Any help or advice that you can offer is appreciated. |

Well it certainly is one of a few places to be with a computer science degree. I'm willing to bet you could get at least a temp job at MS, although getting a permanent position with them is pretty difficult. But be forewarned, I've had a multitude of friends work for them (I lived in the Seattle area for most of my life), and NONE of them liked it. But they pay well. *shrug*
There's a ton of other tech companies in the area, most of which are in Redmond, like Microsoft. So I don't doubt that you could find a job in that field fairly easily.
As far as living goes, I'd definitely recommend the city, but rent is much steeper there. The eastside is more affordable (apartment-wise) and where most of the tech jobs are, but it's mostly yuppy families. There's much more of a "scene" (whichever one you're looking for) in the city.
It's a hell of a town and I miss it like hell, but you definitely gotta know where to look for fun stuff to do. And the weather sucks 10 months outa the year. But for those two months, it can't be beat!
Best of luck! |

Jeffree pretty much nailed it in terms of the tech jobs. If you can afford living in the city (for studios, the rent is decently priced and you can even get lucky and find an affordable one bedroom here and there), then I would highly suggest living in the Capitol Hill neighborhood. It's the hipster/gay/super liberal area of the city with the strongest music scene, friendliest community, most lax police presence (see: smoking joints in front of them is a-okay) and all in all just a great ing neighborhood to be in.
Seattle's music scene is also incredibly strong as well. I'll get into that later, though. :p
Also, what's the word on coming up for Decibel this year, Jeffree? |

Thanks to both of you for the information. At the moment, I am actively searching for jobs in the area, but in the near likelihood of not having finding one (one relevant to my degree), I'm moving out on what I have. Hopefully, I will get some bites. If not, though, I'd rather be in the same boat I am now in a different city (disenfranchised, employed at a low, low paying job, etc).
Decibel Festival is on my list to visit in the mean time, so I am looking forward to that. |

Cap Hill's definitely where I'd try to live if I was still in the area! Do you live there?
I dunno about Decibel this year, everything's up in the air for me at this point  My GF's up there right now though so I might end up taking a trip up that just happens to coincide with Decibel :D |

Yep. About two blocks north of Pine, just behind the community college.

True. I have a few interviews that will more than likely turn up nothing, but I have some fundings that will last me a few months while I try to find something temporary. |
