Club dilemma: Watch or drink?

One of the most interesting things about Friday's Clubland documentary (airing at 8 p.m. on Global's Currents) is that it manages to both glamourize and demonize this city's embattled Entertainment District.
Originally screened as part of this year's Hot Docs festival, the cut-for-TV version makes Toronto look like a fun, hedonistic, Bright Lights, Big City party that will be appreciated by anybody who's ever had a night out where their life was saved by a deejay.
It also does a pretty good job of outlining the frustrations of residents in the King-Spadina neighbourhood, reflected by Toronto Councillor Adam Vaughan's war on fun.
There are plenty of shots of drunk kids and macho dudes beating each other up after last call.
As a reporter who has covered the club beat for a long time, I'd say it does a pretty fair job of summing up most of the issues and mindsets of all of the players, including the cops, promoters, club kids, visiting 905-ers and high profile club owners.
But it is limited by focusing only on the downtown core and is already a little outdated.
And it doesn't provide any answers to the condo vs. clubs, mixed-use conundrum that has plagued the area for almost a decade – not that I really expected it to.
It also doesn't consider that beyond the big fight in the city's core, there are plenty of skirmishes elsewhere, like the growth of the Ossington Ave. club scene, which I think should be considered an unqualified success, even though it has sparked a city moratorium on new clubs.
Another new hot spot that has sprung up since the doc was made is Harbord Ave. Toronto Star restaurant critic Corey Mintz recently reported on a dispute between Deputy Mayor Joe Pantalone and the Ici Bistro restaurant he opposes at Harbord and Manning. Pantalone argues that it doesn't fit the area.
Being a homeowner in my mid-30s, as I watched this doc, the famous words of Danny Glover in Lethal Weapon kept echoing in my head – "I am too old for this s---" – and I would undoubtedly be concerned if a big club tried to open on my block.
But as an entertainment reporter, I wish the doc had tried to find some mechanism to work toward a peaceful coexistence.
Also unfortunate is the Friday night time slot, since one group of people with a very vested interest – the clubgoers – will be far too busy pre-drinking to watch.
The only real constant about clubland is change and, in the time since this doc was shot over 17 nights two summers ago, one of the key players interviewed, former New York club kingpin Peter Gatien, has left Circa. There are plenty of rumours flying that club might not be long for this world.
The next real big change to come in the area will be completion of the Bell Lightbox, the Toronto International Film Festival's new headquarters and, fittingly, accompanying condo tower. The project will definitively have a transformative effect on the area and, in a funny way, could be the lifeline for the clubs that manage to stick it out for a few more years.
One possible way to alleviate the pressure gasket when all the clubs empty after the 2 a.m. last call is to extend drinking hours to 4 a.m., like they do during the film festival, when the celebrities make their annual pit stop in town.
After all, if late closings are okay for the stars and their fans when they are visiting, why not for the rest of us who happen to live here?

Am I the only one who enjoyed the first few episodes of The Beautiful Life TBL?
They took it off the air, and they're still airing the less interesting Melrose Place? Ugh!! I thought the idea was a little bit original with the model idea.. they even had Nina Garcia as a special guest! They should have at least finished the season. Bullocks! That hot cast going to waste.
barbina
I think 'The Forgotten' is a newage coldcase.. but its good
Mercy's main character is hot, so I'll be hooked for a bit.. but it better pick up a bit otherwise I'm done.
House & Grey's Anatomy are both going to be amazinggg <3

No need for a Three Rivers heart transplant
Fri, October 2, 2009
Katherine Moennig, who plays Dr. Miranda Foster, and Daniel Henney, who plays Dr. David Lee, star in the new medical drama Three Rivers.
There was a wide array of responses when the cast of Three Rivers was asked if they have personally signed up to be organ donors.
Three Rivers, after all, is a new medical drama that deals with the high-stakes, high-intensity, highly emotional race against time that is organ donation. It debuts Sunday, Oct. 4, on CBS.
“I know I always was (an organ donor),” said Katherine Moennig, who plays Dr. Miranda Foster. “I was raised to believe that, by my mom. And when Daniel and I went into surgery, that reinforced it. So I’m proud that I am.”
Daniel, in this case, is Three Rivers castmate Daniel Henney, who plays Dr. David Lee.
“When we were in Pittsburgh shooting, Kate (Moennig) and I had a chance to sit through a heart transplant, literally right in front of the patient, two feet away, the whole thing,” said Henney, who was not an organ donor previously. “It was a surreal moment for me. It has changed everything.”
Three Rivers isn’t likely to change everything, or anything, as far as the TV landscape is concerned. After all, it merely is another show about doctors and nurses and hospitals, and there is no shortage of those.
That said, at least Three Rivers has a different hook.
Three Rivers examines the multi-layered turmoil of organ donors, organ recipients and the surgeons who perform the procedures at a stellar transplant hospital, located in Pittsburgh. Also playing a key role in the drama, obviously, are the donor families, who understandably are dealing with very mixed emotions when forced to think about organ donation at their darkest hour.
Leading the elite team of medical personnel is affable workaholic Dr. Andy Yablonski, played by Alex O’Loughlin (Moonlight). His co-workers include Dr. Foster (Moennig), who has a rebellious streak and a fiery temper, and Dr. Lee (Henney), a womanizing surgical resident.
In the first episode, at least, much of the drama is filtered through Moennig’s character. In addition to trying to save lives, Dr. Foster is trying to live up to her father’s reputation.
“I hope it (continues), actually,” Moennig said. “(Conceiving Dr. Foster) in the first place, she was this very strong, strong-willed, independent force, yet she was also so vulnerable and affected by everything she was dealing with every day. I think that’s her dichotomy right there.
“You are going to see constant situations that we’re put in that are, I’m sure, very volatile, with all different personalities coming from all different angles.”
The 31-year-old Moennig, who is a cousin of fellow actress Gwyneth Paltrow, previously was best known for playing Shane McCutcheon on The L Word. Moennig may always have been an organ donor, which made her a natural for Three Rivers, but she admitted working on the series already has changed one of her hygiene habits.
“We found out that heart disease is mainly caused by bad teeth,” Moennig said. “That can cause terrible heart disease.
“So the second we wrapped, I ran to the dentist.”

Well, for about 2 weeks ahead (give or take).
Even better, SIGN IN, create an ID.
They it auto remembers your preferences (ie. provider so all channels properly apply to you specifically). ... Actually it may do this w/o creating a profile now that i think about it.
But the MAIN reason to sign up on Zap2it is so you can add shows to your FAVOURITE LIST!!!!!!!!!
Then when you view the TV listings, check off the box to highlight your Favourites... and BAM! Any show you've added to ur favourites is highlighted in purple!
I cant tell you how great and valuable this is if you have many shows that you follow and wanna see at a quick glance if any of them may be on.
The purple alerts you of any shows you wanna be aware of when they air.
I dunno what id do w/o it now... it be much more cumbersome having to slowly look over all the names of shows in the listing to see if any of mine were airing that night
(i often forget which nights my programs air on, lol)
