...and the follow up to that (Elementary, Dear Data) five seasons later, with "Ship in a Bottle."

Honestly, I've always felt that the Holodeck, with its allowances for virtually an infinite range of possible scenarios and alternate realities, was occasionally something of a convenient plot device, but I also feel that it has played a critical role in some of Next Generation's finest moments.

The aforementioned 'Ship in a Bottle' was certainly one of them, which tinkered with the mind-bending idea of creating Holodecks within the Holodeck (in addition to some wonderfully rich characterization of Professor Moriarty).

There's 'Emergence,' which used the Holodeck as the hub of the Enterprise's own emerging consciousness, represented by different Holodeck characters.

Although it's not exclusively a Holodeck episode, "A Matter of Perspective" uses the Holodeck as the essential re-creative setting in which they explore the concept of alternate accounts regarding the same sequence of events differ wildly from person to person.

I'm sure there's a variety of others I've failed to mention, but I think the aforementioned examples are enough to demonstrate that Holodeck episodes aren't merely an excuse for Picard and Guinan to play dress-up in their leisure time.

NOTHING will ever be as bad as Tom and Janeway hitting warp 10 and evolving into those lizard-like beings and doin' it. :wtf:

Tom Paris was my first puppy-love until that bitch B'Elanna came along. However, Harry Kim always held a special place in my heart.

In terms of Holodeck episodes, the one that STILL makes me a bit teary-eyed is the episode where the doctor has his holo-family. :(
