Mate this is ing amazing. I can't remember the last time I got this into a set. Your track selection is flawless. All the tracks have that true 'trance' feel yet still maintain their own character and don't feel generic at any stage. I think this is much, much better than the Mad Monkey mix, and I liked that pretty intensely. You really need to do more of these.

The mixing is adequate and no more. I would say this is your weakest point but it doesn't make one jot of difference when the track selection and flow is so precisely correct. The old-school vibe is excellent without feeling kitchsy or overly dated.

Seven million out of 10.

The track at the 87 minute mark is awfully euro-dancey, but in the context of this mix I liked it. :gsmile:

Also, I was very surprised to see Criss Source in there. I really liked his track Hugs 'n' Kisses, but I never thought I'd see him in a set like this. Can you give me a rough time for when his track appears?

Thanks a bunch for your review. I'm glad you liked it :)
The Criss Source track is the one that starts around 57:30 (with the astronaut samples). This is an oldie from 1998. Really different than the recent stuff Criss have been doing.

I'm actually planning to make a shorter psytrance mix soon. Got some really fine tunes lined up to use for it. Nothing dark or nasty. Just some really fine psy tunes that even suits a beginner really well.

Sounds like I would love this one. I started listening last week but I've been caught up with projects and being out of town, I will be sure to review this as soon as I can, I even have your own file on my desktop already up :)

Here is my review!

From where to start? I have a bit of mixed feelings about the set, and by mixed I dont mean bad and good, I mean that I just felt kinda awkward after the end of the set. This is probably because of my mood (you must listen to particular sets only in the right time to feel them better, note to self)!

So, the tracklist looks promising and I had no doubts that this will be excellent. All the tracks (as Domesticated mentioned) have a unique mark that is recognizable and is making them all above the decent, trendy crap that is spread by copy-artists. This is the biggest plus of the set. There is no two opinions that you managed to stack together beautiful tracks from the "gold" era of trance. I particularly loved the goa tracks the most (surprise :D ).

But... What did I mean behind the mixed feelings comment? I dont know how to explain it better but I will try it. The set feels as a compilation more than a mix. Yes, all the tracks in the mix carry the morning feel, beautiful sunrise melodies etc. but it somehow feels that way and in my opinion this is because of two reasons: first, the mixing was ok but noticeable and for a sunrise mix which wants to be both relaxing and refreshing for the senses, it kinda disturbs the flow. Secondly, the utilisation of both old and new tracks makes it a bit of messy in terms of "sounding". What I mean is that the sunrise feel just gets reversed every time a new track kicks in. Hard explanation, I know, but this is what I felt. Another possible explanation is that you just kept the tracks too long (most of) and this is a direct circumstance from it.

I hope you won't get a false view of my opinion since I liked the set, its just that maybe I had other expectations or maybe I wasn't in the right mood. I will give it more listens for sure and thanks for sharing. I will wait for your psy mix as well. Cheers! :)

Thanks for your review :)

I never had any specific intention to make it a sunrise mix or anything like that. Even the opening track which starts of really dark and edgy. Otherwise I would have chosen a different intro track.

Also interesting that Domisticated thought the flow was perfect and you feel the flow is the downside of the mix. I guess it's all up to the listener to decide :)
As I said this might be due to that you thought it was a sunrise mix which it is not. Yes alot of the tracks have a melodic approach but if I had the intention to make it a sunrise mix I would have put them in a different order and taken some of them away.

Anyway glad you listened! :)

While I place enormous trust in my own musical judgement, Magadansky is one of the few people whose opinion I would give precedence over my own. Irrespective, I still think this mix is ace.

I don't generally recommend sets to my friends because they like McTrance and don't bother downloading any good stuff I send them, but I forwarded a link to this page to six mates today in an effort to show them what real trance sounds like.

I read your original post and thats why probably my expectations were for something like a sunrise mix. As I said, I need some more listens.

P.S. The first track was imo light not dark one (but by dark I understand really dark) :p

Haha of course not dark as mega über dark ala russian dark tranz maffia. But dark as not uplifting :)

Took a listen to it, and it was really damn good... wasn't too crazy about the harder-tinged psytrance at the end of the set, but the beginning-middle introduced me to a lot of great music I haven't heard before. Some nice acid lines and melodies in there. I'll definitely listen again!
