Monitors under £400

Hi guys,
I'm considering buying a pair of KRK RP6 G2, Samson Rubicon R5A/R6A or Yamaha HS50M monitors for my home studio. Would any of these be a good investment or are there other monitors I should be looking at that are under £400? Also, since I am only using a small, relatively untreated room, would I need a sub with any of these pairs of monitors in order to mix bass effectively?
Cheers,

I have the Rp5's and I tested the RP6's extensively with different cds in DV's studio here in uk. I just couldnt part with the money at the time but the RP6's definatley wont dissapoint you. I mean my 5's surprise me sometimes and they are loud too.
Good thing is they make a sub too in the same range which im gonna get to complete your monitoring set up.
Ok sorry missed ur sub post - i currently dont have a sub and im getting on OK in fact depends where I am in my room I cant lie on the bed and listen to tunes because they sound too bassy but sitting approx 1.5m away from each one l+r is ok.
but I am getting a sub the studios at uni all have one and when you turn it off even though they have beefy MK monitors the difference is incredible. |

If you're seriously planning on getting a sub soon, get the samsons, the ribbon tweeter is one league ahead of the KRK's, though their low end response plain sucks, KRK's have a nicely rounded sound picture all over the spectrum, they don't excel at anything, but don't suck a lot at something either. |

what about the yamaha hs80m? i've heard nothing but good things about these but think an 8 inch monitor might be overkill for my small bedroom studio. Plus they are more expensive than the krk rp6 and samson r6a. |

I heard that the yamaha hs80m are too clinical sounding and your ears get tired over long sessions. What he meant was they are honest but I just found the krks had more warmth. |

I've never heard anything negative about the HS80m's. I did an extensive, several week long testing of current monitors available at varoius differnt stores and the only thing negative about the HS80's is that they boom in a small room. Other than that, they are by far te best monitors for the money and then some. If you've got space, and not a boxy small room, then go for the HS80's - they blow the vast majority of KRK's out of the water.
If you've got a small room then buy the JBL 2325's - I did and I can say with confidence that thy are the best small monitors in their price range.
I think there are a few benchmarks in price ranges at least for the freseeable future.
The HS80's are the benchmark in their price range and if you go above that then you're really saving up for Focal twins. Below the HS80's I have to say it's hard to find a better small monitor than the 2325's. |
