So apparently "big riffs" means "long melodies", particularly longer than 4 bars. Of course, those phrases are not even close to being synonyms, but sure, they're nice to have. I would hardly say that they're rare, though; evidently you're listening to the wrong music. Almost every track I've ever produced and a great many that I listen to have long-ish melodies.
Don't get me wrong, I also hear plenty of boring repetitive tracks with no real hooks, but to me those are mostly filler dancefloor tracks. |

Not sure what you are talking about, but I consider this as a big riff and its like 2 bars long.

Where is the "riff", and what is "big" about it?
I think everybody here seems to be using a completely different definition of the term, and in most cases it's really just being used to mean "stuff I like". |

For example if the sound used for the riff is more prominent or important than the notes of the riff itself.
I think Darude - Sandstorm has a big riff (very recognizable), but if you would play back the notes of the melody with a standard sound, its just really dull.
If the melody is more important than the sound used on the riff, it will often just sound as good or recognizable no matter which sound used to produce it.
So id say recognizable lead sound, on a less or more recognizable melody line makes a big riff, having only a recognizable melody does not.
This is how i see it anyways. |

The Marcel Woods example does have a very distinctive lead melody/ sound. Whether it's called a riff, a hook, or just a melody - as you say, everyone has their own definitions.
But that example does capture the spirit of what this thread is talking about, in terms of "big riffs", the way I personally understand it.
I'd go more with "hook" than "big riff" though. |

How many people do you know, that aren't producers or DJs, know the basic waveforms? People don't care about that kind of stuff. They will remember lyrics, grooves, melodies, and the type of basslines that are meant to be the lead. |
