Every week I'm going to be posting a track up. I'd love for people here to give their opinion on how the track was made and to be as specific as possible. I think this would be extremely beneficial to members here who do not fully understand the detail that must go into tracks. I think this can turn into a very, very good learning experience for everybody involved, including the professionals.
All I ask is that you check your ego and pride at the door. Nobody knows everything and everybody has bad days where they can't remember . This forum is absolutely pointless if people are afraid to post for fear of being ridiculed. With that said, let's see how those ears are working!
We'll start with a somewhat basic progressive breaks track for this week (licensed by Black Hole) and see how it goes from here. Since we're using Youtube, we're worried more about composition here than engineering, however feel free to comment on engineering if you can really pinpoint things with a youtube link.
Distant Fragment - Fantasies 8:30
Here is my quick run down before I sleep :) Obviously a very basic opening with the kick and minimal percussion. Paying attention to detail, you'll hear the quick suttle percussion elements that he has added to give it an unconsciously professional flavor. Automation of the lead slowly begins to come in with the guitar until it has a little hook and hits. Not quite sure what the wave form is on the bass, but I'm pretty certain it's just a solid square. One interesting thing to note about this track is the guitars for it were recorded live and he used the very first take. As it's nature, the track slowly builds without really doing much besides paying to attention. I'm not good at verbalizing tension and release, so maybe can somebody step in here as it is obvious the "tension" starts with the new guitar melody in the break. It's an electric guitar obviously, playing an octave and sometimes two and even at one point three above the rest of the track. Some nice gated/sc'd pingponged atmospheres during the melody and then bam it hits. Goes back to the hook and the original kick and solid square form bass with electric guitar. The snare has a bit more bite after the break to help the track continue to progress (which makes it great for a progressive DJ) - Lots of velocity automation with specific guitar parts as it reaches the end. Finally the track breaks apart just as it was constructed.

?? Black Hole owns this track. Very surprised more people are not participating. Especially the ones who speak much wisdom in other threads. |

| This thread is a good idea, but when I first saw it I was feeling too lazy to participate. Will give this a go later today. ;-) |
