Sudden CPU max out

After experiencing some small performance issues with the busiest parts of a track, I read somewhere that the best asio driver to be using would be the sound card's asio driver. So i went into cubase and changed it from ASIO4ALL to Creative ASIO. I experienced even worse performance and immediately switched it back to ASIO4ALL. However, my CPU remained maxed out, with CPU permanently at 100%, without anything playing. Before, it was around 40%. Even without a project loaded, the CPU usage is now at 50%.

I have no idea why this is happening all of a sudden, and have tried everything I could think of to remedy it. I turned off all vsts and fx, removed vsts completely, increased asio buffer size, played around with the other asio settings, tried other drivers, reinstalled cubase, reinstalled asio4all, reinstalled audio drivers, reinstalled processor drivers, and did a system restore. None of this has made any difference. My PC spec isn't the problem as it was working fine before i changed the asio driver. Does anyone have any ideas as to what is causing it and how it can be fixed?

looks like either you will have to do a reinstall and start from fresh.

or what i have done in the past download a demo of fl and see if the same thing happens if it does then you will know its the sound card or the pc set up
and not your current software if it doesn't then more or not you have a bad patch or something.

I would check your cpu temp, dust the heat sink, check all ventilation and cooling... if its a p4 or any high freq. single core.. they runs hot, and step down their capacity considerably when running hot... not positive on this, but its happened to me before.

Do a system restore to the day before to eliminate any driver problems you may have caused.
