| Looking for stuff like Sugar Bytes Thesys....I hate the Ableton sequencing process but love everything else about it. I am liking the Thesys demo, but I want to see if there are any more options out there before I pull any triggers. Your suggestions are very much appreciated. |

7aliens Catanya is similar:

I demo'ed both, but ended up going with Thesys/Eloquence. Also, in case you're not already aware, Thesys is not a new product, just a new name for Eloquence. Another company with a product by the same name threatened a suit if Sugar Bytes didn't change the name. |

I just play the keyboard, and occasionaly use the piano roll, so I've never gotton my head around sequencing products - what value do they bring?
This is'nt some sarky comment (it's often hard to tell on a forum), just a genuine question. |

| Yea step sequencers are cool but can sometimes be limiting. Each to their own I guess. |

I think most people tend to think of step sequencers in terms of how they play note patterns, but they can be pretty limited there because, usually, once you've defined the intervals in a sequence, they're locked in and therefore will only work only certain chords. For example, a sequence that is outlining a minor chord (e.g., the root chord of your track) usually won't sound very good played over a major chord (e.g., the VII chord). Although, some step sequencers (e.g., Thesys) have keyswitches that allow you trigger different patterns, scales, variations, etc.
Where I find these types of step sequencers to be most useful is for modulating plugin or hardware parameters, other than note interval. It's often a lot easier to do this with a dedicated grid-type sequencer and access to any available CC's than it is to sequence intricate control over these parameters in your DAW using envelopes. |
