In that other thread, NightShift gave examples of patterns for rolling basslines.
He said:
common patterns are:
XbbbXbbbXbbbXbbb
XbBbXbBbXbBbXbBb
XbBbXBbBXbBbXBbB
XBbBXbBbXBbBXbBb
X-bbX-bbX-bbX-bb
X = Kick
b = bass
B = bass +1 octave

How would you place the sub bass in these patterns?
For example, in this pattern --> XbBb|XbBb|XbBb|XbBb
would you put sub-bass notes simultaneously with each "b"?
So it would be like this?
X b - b |X b - b |
X - B - |X - B - |
X S - S |X S - S |
(where S = sub-bass)
Cheers. |

I generally sidechain my sub bass and leave it at that |

Yes, if you're using a sub bass, it would probably sound fine to have it doubling the low notes of the "main bass".
In the end though, use your ears, maybe try dancing to it, see if it compels you to move. If it sounds/feels right in the end, then whatever pattern you're using is fine. |

I personally like the
XbBbXbBbXbBbXbBb mid
X-ssX-ssX-ssX-ss sub
pattern
but this is such a case of playing till it works that pretty much all the patterns you listed can be used as either the mid or sub bass to a rolling bassline. A personal rule of mine is to not put subbass on at the same time as kick. If for some reason I do then make sure a sidechain is keeping it in check.
I find very subtle sidechaing, always on the sub, occasionally both sub and (mid bass + mid bass delay) bussed and sidechained to kick depending on what sounds better to me at the time.
if you play with all these ideas im sure you will strike a nice rolling bassline very soon.
Also i don't know why but sometimes they dont sound complete unless theres some high hat + perc action, maybe even a trance lead riff going on aswell so bare that in mind. Dont forget that the kick can also have an affect on how good it sounds so dont forget to flick through your kick drums while listening aswell. Also dont spend to long looping the same thing over and over cos it will get boring and even if its good you will think it sounds from hearing it so long! |
