Traktor vs. Ableton vs. ?

Been considering moving from CDs over to my laptop for Djing live.

Was wondering if those of you who use laptops to Dj live have any recommendations in terms of the Ableton vs Traktor question. Can you share the negatives and positives for each?

Also open to any other suggestions software wise.

Thanks.

Ableton gives you more control of the grid to which you match your tunes. A track which changes BPM in traktor will leave the program stumped from what I understand. Ableton doesn't let you control it with your CDs or vinyl. Yet.

I'd go ableton, traktor only really replaces your CD wallet with your computer. but I suppose if you like to be hands on with your beatmatching then thats OK.

For a start, try the DJ Forum and not the Production Forum. Then use the search function, as there are many threads about this.

i guess that depends on what you are trying to achieve while dj'ing. if you are the type of dj that likes to be mix traditionally and you enjoy 'feeling' the music (by that i mean touching the vinyl, etc) then maybe you should go with traktor.

however, if you like playing around in your sets (which you can also do with traktor, but i guess it requires a little more concentration) then you will enjoy more than functions ableton live has to offer.

i personally enjoy ableton a lot more since i've grown out of traditional mixing, however, it's all what you want man...test it out and see what turns u on.

i have friends who own both softwares so i just tested both on their set ups before i made a move, if you have that chance then definitely go for it as mixing is such a personal thing, it's like buying a car, u gotta test drive it before u lay down the cash u know what i mean.

good luck!

Why would u need two computers?

Use ableton as a slave for Serato - Whatever comes out of Serato is send to Ableton giving me the chance to use Abletons' FXs.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think you can run Serato as Slave. Not yet at least. We'll have to wait til NAMM to find out what they have coming out.

read again. he said ableton as slave, not serato. serato as master.

thats ing interesting man i gotta get me serato and try that .

tell me more about it.

Using ableton as a monstrously expensive effects unit? Pointless. You can do everything in ableton that you can in serato, except use CDs to control the scrub position.

I still don't think you can do it, yet. There's no audio coming out of ScratchLive. You need the SL interface to hear any audio, and you can only hear the audio through your mixer. You would have to reroute the audio from the mixer back into your computer.

Everything might change after NAMM, when Serato & Ableton reveal their new child!

as ableton is a slave i assume serato only need a input for ableton, not sure its meant for efex but rather adding parts from ableton?

no idea though but it sounds interesting, launching loops etc from ableton in a serato main mixer.
