some of you may remember a thread i made a while back abt moving to NYC. well i will finally be moving in 2 weeks time so should get there around Oct. 24th. i then have about 1 week in which to find a room in NYC since i start work nov. 2nd.

i have already been emailing ppl. from CL and other roommate sites and have some leads, but would like to get any advice i can.

i am looking at: all over manhattan, brooklyn (williamsburg, green point, woodside, jackson heights), queens (astoria).

i just want a room with some cool roommates, cant really afford an apt. all to myself atm.

basically i want some place thats safe, where lots of young ppl. live, and that has good nitelife. my budget is around 1200 for a room, hope that's enough!!!

so what other places should i add to my list of places to look at rooms in?

For 1,200 you can get your own apartment in Queens and some parts of Brooklyn, and the Bronx. Thats more than I pay for my 2 bedroom in Queens. Why are you looking for rooms?

look in the upper east side. it's dirt cheap right now because of the subway construction. you can live in the city for 1,200. easily. however, you might have to share.

check craigslist, it's all there.

For 1200 you can come live with me in si ill even get you daily BJs on targee included in the rent.. I used to rent a room in Brooklyn for 340/month +utilities.

thanks guys for the helpful replies. i will be working in midtown manhattan so ideally i want to live somewhere that i can get to work from within 20 minutes tops. is this doable?

thanks again!

edit: and i would prefer to live with roommates at least for the first 6 months or so because i dont know anyone there in NYC so i figure that will be a good way to make some friends too ;)

With the budget you have, you could easily get your own 1BR in Sunnyside or Woodside, or could room with someone in Astoria for around 800 (utilities included). If you go as far as Jackson Heights, you could get to midtown in 20-30 mins on the Express 7, but for some reason Jackson Heights is a little pricier than Sunnyside.

QUEENS is the way to go !!! like Chaska said Woodside , Astoria or Sunnyside are just 10-15 mins from midtown.

In that case I think Manhattan will be your best option, there's probably a ton of rooming opportunities on craigslist.

If cragslist doesnt help you can check out the classified's in some of our local papers...but keep away from the agencies since they charge a fee etc.

btw, don't know if u realize but when u go on craigslist search under rooms/shares, cause most likely there's people out there that are already looking for roommates, don't rent an apt then find roommates. that's not smart.

also, there will not be any brokers involved if you go on rooms/shares. since it's people like us posting the ad looking for roommates.

i actually found a couple of great beautiful and newly renovated spots over at morning side, by like 110 and so for a whopping $750!! thats dirt cheap...so i ask myself, why is it so cheap? mind, thats not the only place i found around that price..ive come across a couple of cheaps rooms in morning side that looked very nice n comfortable

can someone shed some light on me about the neighborhood? explain why its so cheap
yumpop
It isn't the best area. You get cheaper the further uptown you go, except for some areas of Harlem that are getting expensive because they are new construction.
