EKET, Nigeria – The nine-year-old boy lay on a bloodstained hospital sheet crawling with ants, staring blindly at the wall.

His family pastor had accused him of being a witch, and his father then tried to force acid down his throat as an exorcism. It spilled as he struggled, burning away his face and eyes. The emaciated boy barely had strength left to whisper the name of the church that had denounced him — Mount Zion Lighthouse.

West Africa is filled with rumor and superstition, especially regarding supernatural spiritual practices. The former President of Cote d'Ivor, for example, was long rumored to conduct human sacrifices to equal the age of his chief rival every year on the rival's birthday. No evidence that it happened, but the rumors persist that he did it at the behest of a spiritual advisor who could commune with another world.

Read about it countless times, and even saw it on the telly once.

The images I saw were disgusting. A whole village ganged on a handful of frail kids and beat them up to death. Those that survived the merciless kicks, punches, and stomps, would then be set on fire. And, what revolted me the most, the villagers looked all joyful, as if they were on a festival. I still remember the grin on the face of a guy after he piledrive'd a kid like Zangief, as the kid's neck snapped.

I think you mean "condemn": a condom is not really helpful against roundhouse kicks :p

haha, good point. however, i was not relating the condom with their superstition violence. i was making a completely different statement, they need to practice safe sex & stop spreading aids within one another AND stop popping babies every time they have sex, along with other things they should really learn about...

a condom doesn't stand a chance against a roundhouse kick :tongue3 that should be in a fortune cookie.

^ i.e. they should stop existing

REminds me of an interesting story. The sibling of a friend of mine used to volunteer in Africa somewhere (I think he was in MSF but can't remember this was a while back). Anyway he used to give talks on safe sex etc and would demonstrate by putting a condom on a broom handle. In some of the remote villages he'd be talking through two interpreters so a lot would get lost in translation. Anyway one time he came for a repeat visit to see how things were going and the villagers were pissed off that the condoms he'd given them didn't work.. apparently they had been putting them on broomsticks in their huts.. thinking it was supposed to have some mystical talisman-like birth-control effect lol.

wow that's pretty ed up.

but you know, we have stuff like this (kinda) here in the states too. not really with the whole exorcism thing and pouring acid down mouths or whatever; but there's been a lot of recent child violence ... kids just ganging up on one and beating the out of them / setting them on fire.
