So I finally got my luke fair fix. I've considered him my favourite DJ for a while now and I got to see him. Awesome.
Never been to Toika Lounge, but it's a nice and small. Kinda like partying in someone's living room with a nice bar. Intimate, with a pretty decent sound system. Just the way I like it.
Toika fits about 150-200 ish, and when you bring someone like Luke Fair into one of these small clubs, you get a niche crowd. People who are there just for Luke Fair. Vibe was great. Drunkeness and sketch factor was nil. Refreshing change from many of T.O events.
One of the hardest thing to do as a DJ is to find your own style that makes you stand out, but still appealing to enough people that you attract a crowd (and gigs lol). Luke Fair's always played a bit of prog with fun sound. I love the recent turn into more funky and sexy house.
Don't get me wrong. I love the tech and stuff that gets played in T.O, but not all the time. So Luke Fair adventure here we go.
I think he played a bit of warm up stuff before Diana played for an hour. After Luke got on around 12:30, it was a relentless adventure wholesome awesome goodness galore. So much energy. Whether it's funk, or bit of diva ish house, touch of tech or warmth of prog, just sick programming and track selection. Very few spots during the set when I felt meh. Crowd loving it. I actually danced for a while. And I thought I retired from this dancing nonsense. :p
Luke played until 4:15. He looked like he could have gone another few hours. Looked like he enjoyed himself. Finished with a track he said he haven't played in 5 yrs. ID anyone?
I couldn't remember when I enjoyed a live set that much. Almost everything was perfect. Luke Fair did things to my soul musically that should be illegal. Event of the year for me.
Walking out of the club, I thought, Luke Fair is a musical god.
PS: I wonder what would happen if Tara and Nada ever got in a dance off. I think Tara might have an edge on endurance, but Nada probably has a bit more on style. There would be craters on the dance floor for sure. :p |

x2 on the event of the year. Last night is actually how events used to be in this city. All music and friends dancing! While Luke's amazing music selection was second-to-none last night, I really feel the vibe was 100% created by the people.
I have to say that it started with Gregor Davidson (BTB). The man has such a passion for good music. I think his feeling spreads man, cause everyone in Toika felt the same way last night. I was having so much fun that I think I broke the bank on buying other people beers....LMFAO. Fortunately for us Luke has the same feeling as Gregor. The guy friggin takes 2 connecting flights to get from Macedonia to Toronto, to play a 120 capacity venue?!?!?! Simply an awesome person!
So yeah Yohan, the music was so good eh? I haven;t heard house like that in so long. Which makes me wonder....WHY NOT? Gregor, you need to keep up with the I&U series because it's certainly something that Toronto needs IMO.
BTW Yohan - I think yer wrong on the lack of drunk factor last night. My hangover is a perfect example. ;) |

Sweet night! Delicious sex house!
Maria Schneider's opener was fun, but I was confused that she had to leave home to pick up prosciutto and roast beef. (This made more sense yesterday in my drunken state lol)
Luke was great! Uhhhhhhhhhhhhhn Fair! It doesn't feel like he's been gone. Missed his grooviness too much! Toronto loves Luke! Probably the best I've heard him this year. Can't remember much today, but I know the music was that good because my feet feel like they've been massaged musically. I recall hearing some next level funky driving melodies during his last hour or so.. WOW! Luke + Toika is a winning combination.
Love the intimacy of the lounge. Haven't been since Luke last played in 2008; they changed the dance floor/deejay booth layout and it works much better. Saw 80% of the same people he drew in last time. I really like this crowd, although it makes me feel young ;) |

nice reviews! :)
saw him 2 weeks ago, and he was at his best then as well. I think its *fair* to say that his consistency parallels that of the likes of Hernan and Diggers |

I almost don't want to review this, last night was just too good.
Toika was full, the rainy weather didn't phase the Luke Fair faithful one bit. Got there close to midnight (after battling a vicious headache) and it was a nice surprise to see Luke already on. Diana had some technical difficulties earlier but rallied and did do a short but lovely groovy house set.
Then Luke was back on and the party was getting into full swing. Once on the dancefloor the tunes just sucked me in and damn.... it was just glorious til the very end. Everything that you could ever ask for from a Luke set... warm, lush, groovy, melodic, funky, chuggy, proggy, bouncy, fun, bomb after bomb... was delivered last night.
I've seen some very good djs recently and Luke blew them away. Quite possibly set of the year for me.
Thanks to the great crowd, tons of friends to dance with, kudos Gregor on yet another legendary night and THANK YOU Luke.
p.s. encore track was Kings of Tomorrow - I Want You (For Myself) (Luke Fair remix). Stellar way to close the night! |

What a night.
Luke came on earlier than expected and played for a bit. Very smooth, sexy tunes. Perfect for warming up the night and meeting new faces.
Diana had a hard job of playing after and before Luke... She did 'okay' Her track selection was great but her technical skills need some work. Calvin Harris- I'm not alone (mau5 remix?) is the track that really kicked off the night for me. I was so happy to finally hear it in a club.
Once Luke came it was a four hour journey of sexy, groovy, bouncy, funky non-stop delicious house music. Very refreshing. His programming is incredible and his mixing so smoootthhh. <3 I loved every moment. Could not stop dancing.
The venue was perfect. The crowd was perfect. It was like having a party with 120 friends. Everyone there loved Luke (but how can you not).
Luke Fair is not a DJ to miss. 2nd best live set of the year (first still being Fanciulli in MTL). I look forward to his next apearence.
A huge thanks to Gregor and his crew. This was my first bring the beats event and I look forward to more in the future. |
