a label wants to remix my tracks, just a few questions. (pg. 3)

Than again, what if the song blows up? Without saying names, I know someone who paid a huge producer a one time fee to remix a track. The track ended up blowing up and got on regular rotation on radio stations. When that happened, the producer came back and asked for more money, but he was assed out. He never thought the song would blow up.
What I'm trying to say is, what if they remix your track and it blows up? Than all kinds of money start coming in and you don't get ? You'll feel really bad. If anything, you should say that after a certain number of sales, you should start getting royalties. Royalties add up quick, specially if the song gets airplay. Again, a good friend of mine made a track in 1992 and 17 years later he's still getting royalties. |

Wow you obviously haven't looked into this have you? I don't know how deals with webshops are now but the last time I checked they used to be 50/50 deals mostly. Thus you would get 50% of the price in the shop after deduction of VAT. Which would probably leave you (or your label) with 40% of what it says in the shop.
That combined with the fact that releasing yourself and doing your own promotion in your own time I'd say the investment is about the same when choosing for tunecore or a label for a starting artist. Oh and Tunecore does not work with any specialised dance music webstore. Not cool. |

i wasnt talking about tunecore this time. audiojelly, beatport, trackitdown, djdownload etc gives u as u say, 50%, while on a big label u normaly get 14% (probably arguable but i didnt get anymore). and thats 14% after beatport etc had their 50% so actaly like 7% of sale-price (practicaly nothing). also some labels take promotion cost away from that too so you basicly ends up with nothing at all. atleast in my experience. u might end up in some dj playlists though as they probably has a big network to promote your tracks. people just gotta do what feels right for them, ive tried the label way and it left me with nothing but frustration. now im running a solo-run instead. |

im thinking this may be the best way to go as well...with your label is it easy to get your tracks up on beatport and trackitdown etc??/ |

| i agree that labels are pretty much useless, it is still a good way to get your name out there. It is a form of endorsement that will separate you from the 1000 other artists that suck. Until you are a brand yourself, labels can help you. |

if u know a little FTP etc its not a big job at all. it takes some time with Beatport though as they require wav as they do their encoding themself. Another thing about Beatport is that they require volume, ive been warned more than one time that if I dont come up with new releases ASAP ill loose the deal. And thats kinda tough as im only releasing my own music, which has been slow the last year. Audiojelly, TrackItDown and DjDownload are great, at everything. I didnt work much to get the deals either just a few emails with links to the first 5 planned releases. Remember though you wont almost get any sales without being good at promoting yourself, this is where I fail lol, but i dont care. The satisfaction u get by doing everything yourself and have total control over the product is great, also ur able to be total true to yourself not taking from anyone, total creative freedom. I recomend it to anyone. Money will come in next life. |

right then mate, im going for it! : ) is there a certain amount of tracks you need 1st before the download sites will sign you up? i know how to use filezilla a bit so i think im ok theres. |

| i just use FireFox´s FireFTP plugin. I dont think there are any rules, make an ok looking website for your label (mine looks like btw), put together a few releases with some remixes or something, and your best tracks and tell them what your plans are. Its three years ago i did it though so things might have changed. I got the deal with Audiojelly and Trackitdown first if I dont recall wrong, both of them have great interfaces for uploading new releases, and great service when somethings wrong etc. I have a deal with Dance-Tunes too but i dont bother putting stuff up on their website before the interface gets better, its terrible. On DjDownload you just load up the releases with FTP and send them an email with a excel-sheet with info and they fix everything in about a week or two. Beatport is its own chapter, I might cancel them before they cancel me. Though the sales are bigger there so i might put up with them. You have to install software and in order to upload content and u have to make these crazy-ass excel-sheets, packing both excel-sheets and all the wavs into one zip and then upload the whole package (might be like 400megs) and takes forever. If it gets interupted u gotta start over, i hate it so i might just cancel it. Beatport is only about top20 anyway which im not lol. |

might be just as good yeah, i dont know. seems to me that myspace is dying/gonna die though due to some greedy boss in there so u might wanna have a independent backup that u have more control over. i deleted my myspace account, gave me nothing.
my point is really, dont be anyones whore :D
and eventhough my sales are ive earned more than i did with a major label. |
