Dynaudios should be great if you have the money for them. Yamaha HS80M's are also worth looking into. Best to try them out if you have a change.

Wouldn't recommend the KRK rokits.

on the contrary I do have $1200 and by the looks of it, it might be a little more. In terms of headphones bought a pair of sony mdrv700's I know they are bashed alot, but I got them for cheap and they seem to be doing the trick.

On the midi keyboard matter, you have some options you might have not considered.

When I was looking for a midi keyboard ~5 months ago, I ended up buying an used Yamaha CS1X synthesizer for 200e. It gives me a keyboard with 5 octaves, velocity sensitivity + some sounds to play around. Plain 5-octave midi keyboard with velocity sensitivity would have cost about as much.

But if he buys a cheap pair of monitors, they will only be difficult to get rid of and further delay getting something more usable.

Try this thread for some TA opinions:

Robby - yes there are good monitors for cheap, not many but some:

JBL LSR 2325p - I got these a couple of months ago and IMO, they're the best small monitors under $600 available (and I tested EVERYTHING). Also, they're only $200 each from Guitar Center.

Behringer B2031A Truths - Big loud and sound quite good, but not good in a snall room and there's a bit of confusion as to whether they changed the design but they still get rated none the less.

Personally, i really didn't like anything offered by KRK - even though they sounded flat, they just sounded fake and lacked clarity, especially in the mod range, but some people love them.

yamaha HS80's are great and probably the best at that price range but you cannot use them in a small room.

How do you buy more expensive monitors when you dont have the money? The op stated $600 budget, so your advice doesnt really help him on that budget. The opportunity costs of not having anything to work with, having to wait longer to be productive, far outweigh the opportunity cost of having something tangible and then upgrading in the future. Simple economic logic.

But of course, since he changed his asset amount to $1200+, now he can afford a pair of ADAM A7's, virtually any decent midi controller, and can get headphones for that amount.

Best bang for your buck is probably going to be a used pair of Mackie HR824s the originals ones. They're going for about $500 which is a steal and I know many producers who use them, so if you can't get your mixes to come out on them there really isn't any excuse.

Great advice.

I loved the hr824 for a long time but after being the standard for nearly a decade they began to get surpassed by new models - now that they are going for that cheap they are such a bargain. Great monitros and if you ca;t mix on them you might as well give it up.
