Motherboard and 3D Card decisions

Sup ppl, my parents have finally decided that we need a new computer (which we have for a few years). I'm going to get a AthlonXP 2000+ but I'm not sure about which m/b to get for it. I'm thinking either the Asus A7V-T (i've heard one of the better boards) or the MSI KT3 333 Ultra 333Mhz - but i need some advice on which is the best board for the AthlonXP. Same with the 3D card, i'm leaning towards the 64M Asus V8170 GeForce4 MX420 but I'm afraid there might be a better card (at around the same price range) which i should get instead.
Any help here would be much appreciated :)
Cheers

Pointy how much u paying for the gf4 mx?
i just bought myself a gainward gf4 ti4200 for $350...far cheaper than the 4400 & 4600, but can be overclocked to go faster than either of them :D:D:D
imo, the mx range are a waste of money...especially the gf4 mx, seeing a gf2 ti can give better performance!
dunno much about motherboards...i heard a few people recommend the epox one, but i dunno which model sorry :(
if u want a forum to browse, try
http://forums.overclockers.com.au/
heheh...i spam there a bit too :)
there was (until this week) trading, vendors verdict & where to buy forums...but unfortunately those were shut down due to problems :(

With that configuration you shouldn't buy a GeForce 4 mx, buy the Ti editions, it costs more, but the mx slows your pc down (imo).
Also check this forum, there you'll get all your questions answered:

The Geforce4MX series is basically just an overclocked Geforce2 (so why did they call it a Geforce4; who knows?)
Definately get a Geforce4 Ti 4400. The reviews and price are great when compared to the cream of the crop Ti4600. |

I dunno how much i'll pay for it, but judging by the price of ur Gainward, i think i'll go that :) Where abouts did you get it from?
As for the system, what i'm getting is:
AMD AthlonXP 2000 + heatsink&fan
Gigabyte GA-7VRXP or MSI K7N420 or ABIT AT7-RAID motherboard
512MB Kingston PC-2100 DDR RAM
Gainward Geforce4 Ti 4400
Western Digital IDE 120GB 7200RPM 8meg Buffer
Creative Sound Blaster Live! 5.1 audio card
16X Pioneer Slot DVD-ROM
TDK 40/12/48 VeloCD Burner
Lian Li PC-65 Case (Aluminium + Window) + 300W power supply
Firewire and USB Capability
10/100Mbit LAN Card
1.44meg floppy disk drive
Main problemo now is with the Motherboard.. cos i'm still not sure :)

| Don't get an MX series GeForce...I was able to find a Pixelview Geforce Ti4200 128MB DDR for a resonable price. |

bought the ti4200 from here
http://www.pcrange.biz/index.html
the dude is in SA, and he orders direct from Gainward Taiwan...but he normally only imports what he knows he can sell...so have to pre-order & wait a couple of weeks :p
i dunno if he gets ti4400, but send him an email if u want
if u want leadtek, try
http://www.zonecomputing.com.au/
and the other popular one is suma
http://www.gamedude.com.au/
...but i've heard a few complaints about shiping times & service at gamedude, so be warned :p

| Got a Leadtek Geforce4 Ti4400 myself. I wouldn't but the MX, doing that is like buying a Geforce3. |

It's funny because my parents have bought me the same pc .and it will arrive tommorrow morning....
for the motherboard i have chose an asus ..this because the asus for me are the best mb ....and the asus a7v333 it's aso good for the overclock:).....then i've bought 512 mb of ddr 333 memory that are always usefull..and for the video card i have the same problem too.I've posted and other thread like these on the cilly out seession asking of what video crad too buy so now i tell you my final decision what was ...
i now have a geforce 2 gts 32 mb ddr and initially i was going to buy a geforce 4 mx ....but then i saw on the interent that the geforce 4 mx it's only a geforce 2 with second memory and other ....so it's not a big pass for a video card .....ahhh.btw i was going to buy the mx 440 not the 420 ....
then i saw for a ati radeon 8500 64 mb ddr ......or for a geforce 3 ti 200 ..and at the final i saw that the radeon it's much better then the geforce 3 and it also the best card for the low price that have ....
At the final i didn't buy any video card and i will use my geforce 2 gts .....because i don't have 187 euro for the radeon .....but if you have i suggest it to you .....
Think that the ati radeon in velocity it's between the geforce 4 ti 4400 and the gefore 3 ti 500....video card that cost a lot more then the ati radeon ....
I will buy an ati radoen 8500 also because soon nvidia will leave it's new chip the nv 30 that will eneter at the top of the video card and so all the geforce ti series will slow down of price drastically and also because ati will release his r 300 soon also ......and matrox his parphelia chip ......
so try to save money more on on a cheaper card for then buy a best one in a year or two .....
my opinion ......
sorry for my bad bad english ......i hope you will understand what i try to mean :)
See ya |

Well this is the machine that i've decided on.
AMD AthlonXP 2000+ with AMD Quiet Fan
MSI Red KT3 Ultra VIA KT333 DDR333
512MG Kingston PC-2700 DDR Ram
Triplex Geforce4 Ti4200 64meg 3D Card
2xSeagate 80Gb 7200RPM ATA-100. Running under RAID 0.
Good IDE RAID Card.
TDK VeloCD Burner 40/12/48
Lian Li PC-65 Aluminium Case with window
350-400W Power Supply Soundcard and USB and FireWire ports are integrated into the motherboard – I believe
Kensington Mini Optical Mouse – Or any decent optical mouse really – No cordless devices.
Microsoft Internet Keyboard
Windows 2000 – Not WinXP
You sound like you know your about overclocking, and i know a bit and that's why i'm getting the Triplex Geforce4 Ti4200 (it also looks sick :) ). These things can be overclocked to beat the Ti4600 easily and you'd save a heap of money. They tested an overclocked Ti4200 against the ATI Radion 8500 and other Geforce cards, and the Ti4200 won all the tests (ATI often coming 3rd/4th) :)
As for the motherboard, i just chose the MSI cos it's red and has alotta good features, including the fact that i'm getting a 6.1 soundcard integrated, which means no need for a flashy SBLive! card

ohhhhhhhhhhh...that triplex card looks sweeeeeeeeeett!!!
hehehe...silver is sexay!!!
hmm...u can get onboard raid quite easily these days, so maybe worthwile looking into that Pointy...i'm not sure if they're cheaper (than getting a raid card seperate)...but just thought u'd like to know
the lian cases r popular...must be the aluminium...but personally i think they look yuk (design-wise anyway)
the seagates are bloody good value at the moment...i picked one up for $230 about 4 months ago...now they're going for about $190, i been meaning to get another one myself :D
not sure how much the tdk burner is, but also check out the lite-on 40/12/48 drives...dirt cheap and no hassles i've heard of...been recommended by quite a number of people, my bro has one i think he got for about $130 but should be cheaper than that now
optical mice r cheap too...can get intellimouse optical (white 5-button one) for about $45, and i just picked up a intellimouse explorer 3.0 for $75...but can get them for $65 :(
