I bought some PM1's second hand off eBay, they work great. But they came with a pair of these:

They work with just the phono cable out my mixer and are louder without the adapters, almost twice as loud in fact, so my question is this, why did the guy ship them?
I am guessing they colour the signal a lot since they reduce the volume so much, any ideas?

the reason you are getting lower signal is because you are using the balanced input without a balanced signal.
seems weired he sent you them really.
using the standard rca's your inputs and outputs are correctly matched. is the 1/4" jack you tried wit hthe adaptor a 3 pole balanced or 2pole normal? |

I am guessing they are two pole since each adapter plug has only two sections not three, how can I know for sure? |

| 2 pole is non balanced. until you start sending a balanced signal to your monitors there isnt any difference in sound quality between the two options you have. id stick to the rca's unless you are using 5meter runs of signal cable. |
