I can't say I enjoyed Caracas too much: if there is a dodgy city in South America, that would be it. In fact, I would advise skipping Venezuela entirely and spending most of your time in Colombia. Despite the guerrilla in certain areas, it is a lot safer and people are friendlier. My feeling is that they try to compensate for the bad rep of their country. At least, that was the general feeling of backpackers with whom I traveled with a few years back.
As for Medellin, I recommend staying at the Palm Tree Hostal. The staff is very helpful and knowledgeable, but more importantly, the place parties like there is no tomorrow. The people who got there before you will no doubt be able to point you in the right direction for good clubs and afters. While your there, make sure you visit the mariachis...
Have a good and safe trip! And beware of border crossing between these two countries...
Cheers,
LP
PS Since Venezuela forbids the money from leaving the country, people are eager to put their hands on US dollar and are sometimes willing to pay more than the exchange rate to get it. Therefore exchanging US dollar into local shops gets you more money for your buck than going to the ATM or the banks. You just gotta be careful keeping these dollars somewhere safe until you exchange them... |
