Now now, no nostalgia. ;)

I wasn't actually staying up into the early hours when I was 7 years old, you know. There's no nostalgia about hearing the mixes today for the first time and hearing an obvious difference in quality.

Nostalgia normally takes 30-40 years of in-the-moment existence to accumulate. Now, people are so bombarded with information that they're ready to look back at an idealised past by the age of 18.

We're living in a generation with no identity, a generation that romanticises and idealises a spiritual past that existed only inside our collective imagination. We're at risk of never living, of only yearning for a falsified era of existence we could never grasp, and wasting away in that eternally futile venture.

that. Our future is being written right now, and the very least I can do is drunkenly call us to arms.

Difference being that I'm not imagining a generally superior past to the present. I'm talking about the decline of one specific radio show.

Do you genuinely think under my own conditions I'm not allowed to claim anything or anyone has declined over the years?

The EM has gone downhill for very simple, logical and unsentimental reasons:

1. Once upon a time, continuous music without advertisements was very rare on the radio. The BBC was one of the only radio stations that could do it while attracting prominent DJs. Therefore the Essential Mix was a rare chance for an extended live DJ mix on the radio. Today, Internet radio has basically erased that. Many DJs play two hour radio sets every single week. The EM is no longer special.

2. The EM is now so old that there it can no longer sustain itself on a limited pool of high-quality DJs playing limited number of sets. If you expect to deliver an EM every single week you eventually have to extend the invitation to lesser DJs, thus diluting the quality.

3. When a DJ has already played 15 billion EMs, they aren't going to put the same effort in. So the one-time EM legends are now more prone to phoning in their mixes. When Oakenfold trainwrecked to in 2006, the writing was on the wall.

Paul Oakenfold - returning back to his '99 days but that's more wishingfull thinking ;)

Does anyone have a list of what has been every essential mix of the year since the beginning of the show? Or has it only been awarded since '99? (I think Basement Jaxx won it that year.)
